Day Trip to Nasa's Deep Space Communication Complex
The Goldstone Observatory

"That's one small step for man. One giant leap for mankind." That famous communique from Apollo 11 during the historic first-ever moon walk was brought to us by the 64-meter antenna at NASA's Deep Space Communication Complex. Located about 35 miles north of Barstow in the Mojave Desert, the complex, commonly called the Goldstone Observatory, sits on the Fort Irwin Military Base. The complex began operating in 1958 to track the Pioneer probes that returned data about radiation around the moon. It continues to play a vital role in communication with distant spacecraft nearly 50 years later, supporting missions in the 21st century. Our tour begins at the Goldstone Museum, where three large areas are dedicated to current missions, past missions, and Deep Space Network history. The guided tour then travels around the 53 square mile complex, where you'll get a chance to view the large antennaes, including the 70 meter diameter DSS-14 Deep Space Antennae. Bring your camera, there will be lots of photo opportunities. After the tour, we'll stop by the cafeteria for lunch. On the way back home, we'll make a stop in Barstow to visit the historic Harvey House and Route 66 Museum. **Please note that you must bring a valid photo ID with you as you will be required to show your photo ID to army personnel prior to being admitted into the Goldstone Complex.
