Tutoring Opportunity (From Hollywood to San Pedro)

We are a non-profit tutoring agency that has worked with Title 1 students for the past 5 years. This year, in Los Angeles, we will work with 3rd through 12th grade students in the LAUSD. Our students will be from Beverly Hills and West Hollywood in the north to San Pedro in the south; from Culver City/Inglewood in the West to Bell Gardens in the East. We are inviting applications for tutors now. If you live and work in the valleys, these positions are not for you. If you are not comfortable working with Title 1 students from low income areas, do not apply.

Basic requirements for the positions:
1.	You must have a college degree.
2.	You must have at least one year of tutoring experience.
3.	You need have a clear livescan (electronic fingerprinting) report with us prior to starting the position
4.	You must CARE about the lives of your students. Yes, this is a dealbreaker. They are all from low income homes and YOU may be their only encounter with a college educated professional. Just consider the consequences of your failure to care about the position and the potential of your student if you fulfill this large responsibility.

Additional requirements:
1.	All prospective tutors must attend 2 days of training in August for a total of 4 hours. This training will be online to save the cost of driving and parking. So, obviously, you will need a computer with internet access to attend.
2.	You will be required to attend weekly conference calls during the program so that issues in one tutoring session may be addressed and learned by all.
3.	You will need to adhere to deadlines on all required paperwork.
4.	You need to care about the success of your assigned students.

Many of the students come from Spanish-speaking families. If you are bilingual and have the necessary background, you will be ahead of the remaining candidates.
Each student in the program is eligible to receive 30 hours of free tutoring in the program. At twice a week, that translates to 15 weeks or almost 3 full months of work for each student. Depending on the number of students, that could mean up to 6 months of work per tutor.

The program is specifically designed to improve each student’s basic skills in either language arts or mathematics, not both. This year, we are stressing writing and comprehension skills in our language arts program while covering all topics in our math program.

The program will start in the first week of September. The tutoring will be held in public libraries or community centers as close to both the students and the tutors as possible and all of it will be in small groups of 2-5 students. This minimizes driving cost. The schedule will be M-F, 3-8p and Saturday, 10a-6p.
