DO YOU AND A FAMILY MEMBER HAVE BIPOLAR DISORDER? (MANIC DEPRESSIVE ILLNESS)

Please consider taking part in an international research study sponsored by the National Institute of Mental Health.

This study will permit scientists to search for genes that may be related to Bipolar Disorder (manic depressive illness).

Scientists at the University of Southern California and LA BioMed at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center are trying to find these genes.

All information will be kept strictly confidential. No information will be given out that might identify you or your family.

DO GENES CAUSE BIPOLAR DISORDER?
• Bipolar disorder runs in families.
• Studies of bipolar disorders in families suggest that up to 85% of the predisposition to bipolar disorder is caused by genes.
• There are probably many interacting genes, rather than a single gene as in some medical disorders.
• More than two-thirds of people with bipolar disorder have at least one close relative with this or a similar disorder.
• Because bipolar disorder tends to run in families, researchers have been searching for specific genes passed down through generations that may increase a person’s chance of developing the illness.

WHY FIND THESE GENES?
• Identifying these genes would help us to understand the brain mechanisms involved in bipolar disorder and other related disorders.
• Despite advances in treatment, complete recovery is something we are still working towards.
• The disabilities resulting from bipolar disorder are often long lasting and severe.
• Finding the genes responsible for this disorder could lead to the discovery of better treatments.

BENEFITS OF PARTICIPATING:
• Help us with this difficult task.
• You will be making a contribution to the future of medicine.
• Finding relevant genes could lead to the development of better treatments.
• You will be helping to improve the lives of others.

WHO MIGHT PARTICIPATE?
• You have Mexican or Central American ancestry.
• You are 15 to 85 years old.
• You have bipolar disorder (manic depressive illness).
• You have at least one brother or sister with a similar illness who is willing to participate.

IF YOU TAKE PART:
• You will be interviewed about your personal and family mental health history.
• You will give a small blood sample.
• You will complete some tests that evaluate thinking, memory and other mental functions.
• You will help us to invite your family members to participate.
• Your confidentiality is protected.
