Hello-
I have been searching on CL for over a month now for the right place. I am willing to hang on until i find it, and i know that it is out there! SO PLEASE READ IN ENTIRETY. have a coffee.
me- i am a female with a straight 9-5 job that pays well enough, have no debt, no credit cards, never been bankrupt, don't have children, free of baggage and weird ex boyfriends. I make short films, long films, spontaneous films and also take photographs. I am also a one woman band who plans on rerecording some stuff for release. I ALSO have a jewelry line I am developing with a friend of mine, so I am a busy girl.
I had been living in Venice in an apartment with a friend, but my room was exploding with projectors, costumes, books and other ephemera and it was time to move. Right now I am staying with a friend until I find the right place to unpack in.
This right place would ideally, be something like this:
ANYTHING with a concrete floor - this could include a back garage that is seperate from your home, preferably with some sort of running water (I moved out here from a place on the east coast, and I have been able to make all sorts of living spaces work for me, so even if there is a garden hose, if the place were right, its right, and those sorts of things are workable)....it helps if this concrete floor can be painted. I definitely would like a place i could paint how i would like, with the stipulation of course that i paint over it on the event of moving out.......
LOFT SPACE. i am not talking about having a tiny room in a large loft with common areas that have already been designed, appropriated, etc.- if i pay the higher price for loft action i would definitely want it to be a shared living space. which means i would want to be able to work on my thing, put up a partition, etc. and have some sort of say in the common areas......for instance, i really dig op art and mid-to-late 60s esthetics, so if i am living with a tagger/hiphop guy our stuff might clash if we don't have our own space in the loft. i really don't care so much what others do as long as they don't care what i do, we dont have to share the same esthetic, it would be nice, but i no longer expect that. i also no longer expect to win the lottery.
COMMERICAL/LIVE/WORK/SKETCHILY ZONED PLACES
this category includes something like an old garage or any old commercial building that hasn't been gentrified, needs cleaning up; anything that is in an industrial neighborhood- any space not big enough to function as an official loft development but that may have one or two spaces that can be converted- any place that is something if a blank slate and might be scary on the outside- i especially love west adams in this regard, seems like there are secret places all over there, and its so quiet at night in industrial areas. anything in this vein would be considered. i am definitely an artist and would definitely be working there and conducting business (online) from there, so nothing illegal is being proposed ;P
PLACES I DON"T WANT TO CONSIDER----
apartments in general just don't have the room. i suppose there are exceptions to this rule- unfortunately, out of the dozens i have seen this month, i have yet to find that exception. i am not seeking simply a place to put a bed. in fact, a place that couldn't be lived in at all but would function as a workspace with running water would be fine too. i have a very comfortable van and many friends and my work is extremely important to me, and i would be quite happy to pay rent for a workspace instead of a live/work space. workspace is THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT OF THIS.
not seeking anything in the valley. i work on the westside and while i have grown to actually dislike the west side i don't want to move to the valley. the east side would absolutely be considered, in fact , if i found a cool place in boyle heights or a cool place near where i work, i would probably be more inclined to go with boyle heights.
also- i am not against roommates, but if you have issues with your roommates, or are sleeping with your roommates (i am not talking about a long term relationship) look elsewhere. not interested in being in the crossfire. don't want no drama because you will get none from me. i have no drug addicted friends knocking on my door at 4 in the morning. i have no abusive ex boyfriends.
also- i smoke cigarettes, and i smoke weed. i am very circumspect- i don't roll blunts in the driveway, but i want to know i can smoke a bowl when i get home without my roommates freaking out. this is the 21st century, its los angeles, i am not in the throes of reefer madness, its like a glass of wine. if you have problems with that, look elsewhere.
