intern (research/edit) and mentorship with author/mag writer (silver lake)

Internship + mentorship available with contracted national magazine writer/author.
Please don't apply if you're not available to start right away. Please live in Los Angeles, own a laptop with access to broadband Internet, and have a means of transportation. It's also preferable if you have not interned at other publications and/or worked other jobs in media or entertainment.

The successful applicant will have likely just completed a solid undergrad education, but feel free to apply if you're at the end of your degree program--as long as you have time and daily availability via e-mail/cellphone. Please share interests in: travel, food, culture (from mainstream film/TV to books, serious music to one-hit rock wonders), health (including recent medical news), style, nutrition, tech, design, social trends, literary nonfiction, and essay/memoir.

Tasks will introduce you to traditional and less obvious magazine and newspaper research methods, fact-checking, copy-editing, writing in different tones/forms, the writer's marketplace, how to pitch, editor communiques, putting together book proposals, transcribing, interviewing subjects (from the famous to the obscure), etc.

There will also be light clerical assistance--occasionally calling PR reps, placing calls and e-mails, sending out packages. But there are also perks: screenings, events, etc. Plus, this is more substantive writing/journalism mentorship and exposure than personal assistance--especially if you are passionate about pitching and writing every day. I've had smart and caring mentors, so I'm devoted to helping the right person get started on what can be a very liberating, challenging, and exciting career path.

What else? Familiarity with Nexis and other popular research tools. Also know how to work with and have a good sense of the Web--particularly the most important media and entertainment blogs. Please, too, read lots of newspapers and magazines. And have favorites (as well as knowledge of specific article formats) for which you would like to write.

I cover the real facts about freelance writing as a craft and business. So you'll get a lot out of this if you're available and hungry, including a strong reference and bylined writing samples. The most important thing is to be extremely passionate about writing for publication asap. It works best if you're 100% sure you want to work in this field right away and have done the necessary prep work.

Please also take initiative and work well independently. Being professional, articulate, and accurate as well as flexible with time zones--particularly Eastern Standard Time--will help. Deadlines are fast, and most editors work in NY. 75% of work can be done from home, eventually, but twice-weekly meetings of a few hours are very likely and often helpful for both of us; half of the time we work on your writing and career issues, half of the time we work on actual journalism and writing projects.

Unpaid or college credit available through universities. Potential for small payments--for helpful contributions with research or lengthy transcriptions--after some time. But what you'll gain in experience, connections, and exposure is worth your time -- much more than answering phones, getting coffee, and faxing contracts at a magazine owned by a conglomerate. Just please don't apply if you already have a taxing full-time job or plan to work in other fields and just write on the side.

Prefer younger people *who lack opportunities* as opposed to career-changers who have held numerous jobs or people with connections who have held numerous internships/jobs and are really ready to get to work for themselves. Lastly, it helps if you have practical journalistic or essayistic writing samples to send along with resume and cover letter that explains why you are ready to pursue this career. [Please don't apply without writing samples.!]

Past interns have scored numerous paid articles in national publications as well as found and retained work at strong magazines.

(THIS SUBJECT IS VERY POPULAR FOR AUDIENCE-NO SHOOTING AND KILLING)

This is a comedy telling the adventures of a modern day Casanova (Charles),
Charles is my recreation of Don Juan. He is a good looking man, has good manners, very determined and sly. He uses his unique, ingenious techniques to impress and earn dates with women. While not being anyone famous, he tells women quite believable and impressive tales about himself. You could find him as a Hollywood director, or a captain of a major cruise liner. He even introduces himself as a violinist of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra when he finds an empty violin case on a garbage dump. Charles is a very cheap individual. Walking around, constantly counting pennies, he attempts to live spending not more than thirty cents a day. He treats his ladies to extremely expensive bottles of wine, into which he has poured the cheapest brand, and other products obtained by him for pennies. The women are in constant awe of his stories about his visits to the Pope and the Prince of Saudi Arabia, which are proven by perfectly engineered photographs displayed by him. On the weekends, Charles invites everyone to a house in the mountains, which he rents. Without spending a penny, he arrives there with his friends, who unknowingly pay for everything, and are greatly thankful for everything.
Charles’ life, and his abilities to live like a king, showing style of dress, generosity, making people see him as a famous, important individual, being able to sell a painting, presented as a masterpiece of a famous painter, but in true form created by him, at an auction for an alarming seventy five thousand dollars, earn him the name of the Modern Don Juan, who destroys all the previous stereotypes of “playboys”, and “Mac-Daddies.
Sincerely Yours Vlad
