It was designated a Historic Landmark District in 1982 when Long Beach recognized the need to preserve its treasured homes. The Park's unique circular layout gives it a seclusion that is unlike any other historic district in Southern California. One must intentionally enter into Carroll Park to access the inner circle, and upon doing so, immediately feels a sense of escape into a kinder, gentler era. The Park boasts a wide variety of historic architectural styles, old-growth trees, and narrow streets that wind around the four grassy islands anchoring the inner circle. The streets were built for horse and buggy, so traffic is naturally deterred. Historians note that the Park was planned with its complex maze of streets to deter farm and ranch wagons on their way to town. The wagons are gone, but the Park continues to enjoy the absence of through traffic. Throughout the year, residents enjoy the mild microclimate of Bluff Heights, and evenings on the front porch reward them with lovely ocean breezes and beautiful California sunsets. Since the Park is sheltered from the drone of traffic, residents wake to the pleaant sound of birds greeting the day and retire at night with the chirping of crickets and the distant low of ships in the harbor. Carroll Park abounds with birds and squirrels and dogs that seem to live in complete harmony. For several years, the kind-hearted residents nurtured several bunnies that someone had callously abandoned in the Park - a cruel thing to do - but maybe he or she knew the magic of Carroll Park and felt it a safe have for the little critters. Recently, a couple of ducks decided to take a break on their flight south and spend some time in one of the residents' swimming pool. Surely they would like to have stayed forever in the calm inner circle of the Park, but nature finally called them away. A Carroll Park neighborhood association has existed for years, and residents joint together for an annual potluck picnic, holiday parties, weedings, and the rare occassion that something threatens to impinge on the peacefulness or character of the Park.
