The number of pets dropped off at city animal shelters increased 22 percent during the first four months of 2008, Animal Services officials announced Thursday.

Between January and April, owners dropped off 1,378 cats, up from 1,132 during the same period last year, and 2,977 dogs, an increase from 2,633 in 2007.

Animal Services attributes the increase to an increase in foreclosures.

"Pets are among the voiceless victims of the current economic downturn," General Manager of Animal Services Ed Boks said.

"I encourage families to prepare for their pets in the event of financial difficulties the same way they should prepare for a natural disaster. Take the time to plan what you will do if forced to surrender a pet. An animal shelter should only be a last resort."

City shelters took in 14,138 dogs and cats during the first four months of the year, compared to 12,197 during the same period last year.

My dog had ate some bug poison and he was drooling and his eyes were glazed, he could barely stand. I took him into Belmont Shores Veterinary Hospital and the office/staff was in a meeting, the doctor took my dog despite the meeting and I was excited. I get out to my car and I see her walk back to the meeting (the meeting was in the lobby, viewable through a big window) and sit down with my dog in her lap. I sit there and watch for another 5 minutes to see if she was still going take my dog back into the examining rooms and she didn't. She was sitting there still talking at the meeting and holding my dog in her lap!!

I go in and confront her and she was very rude to me when I got angry with her that my dog was just sitting in her lap and she told me my dog was sick and I should take him somewhere else...

Spayed female, 10 months old, liver and white. This dog is my child, but due to circumstances beyond my control, I can’t take care of her anymore. Katy needs an exceptional home with people who will love her like I do. She needs a yard that she can run in and a family who will play with her all the time.

Since I was a stay-at-home wife, Katy has been by my side every day of her life since she was 8 weeks old. She minds beautifully. She knows several commands such as: sit, down, come, stay, back, off, no, box, go get your thingy, eat and outside. Katy has 4 cats that she lives with inside this two bedroom apartment, so she loves cats and knows to respect them. She is a little shy around kids and strangers but only because she doesn’t get out hardly ever and just doesn’t know how to act. She will warm up to your family just fine. She sleeps on her mat at the side of my bed every night and is about 90 percent housebroken, but you have to make sure you let her out often. She knows mistakes in the house are wrong.

This dog is the most loyal and loving Springer I have ever owned. All she wants in the world is to stay wherever I am. She is beautifully marked and has long beautiful feathering on her chest and legs. She has really long ears too. We have to put them up when she eats or she’ll make a mess out of them.

I have an application that I will require you fill out and I will probably need to do a home inspection to see where she will be living.

Please understand that this is like having to give away one of my kids, but my whole life has been turned upside down and Katy deserves better than this.

It would be great if you or someone you know could adopt one of my cats too. We are in a desperate situation. See ad from yesterday (July 22, 2008) "need help" in paramount.

Please only reply if you are a serious dog lovers with the room and the financial ability to give this dog a wonderful life. She deserves it. We will discuss an adoption fee when we meet. She has her $200.00 dog house and her toys and a brand new bag of dog food also.

Shyler's story...
Shyler was reported by a kind citizen who saw that the dog was kept chained to a post all day and night, with barely enough food and water to survive. This happened for the first three years of her life since she was just a puppy.

Shyler was quite underweight (she weighed 30 pounds but should of been 35-40), (she is now a healthy weight) and the tops of her ears were eaten down to the flesh by flies (they are healed now). This golden mix was terrified at first when she came into the shelter on 8/14, but her sweet nature is overcoming her fear as she discovers people are here to take care of her. She is happier and happier each day, and now when people she knows come in to her kennel, she does a little dance of joy! She currently has a buddy she is kenneled with who she loves to play with so she would do well in a home with a friend.

I have a beautifully colored and very social male cockatiel that needs a new home. His name is Duey. I have been having Asthma problems and the presence of my feathered friend is not making the situation any better.

Duey is 6 months old and is in great health (since my father bought him for me as a gift from a very well handled avian specialty shop). Duey has everything you'll need including a great cage, toys, food and cage poop remover spray.

I'm looking for a GOOD new home for Duey, not just someone to pass him on to. Ideally, i would LOVE for Duey to go to a home where other cockatiels are already present. Please e-mail me any questions you might have.
