Last year, we designed, developed, and implemented a time collection system based on an Excel front-end and sophisticated Visual Basic programming. Basically, the system is distributed to remote field users, who enter time data for employees and projects. The system validates the data and sends a text file to an FTP site; the text file is then loaded into our payroll system for processing.

We are now ready for the next phase of development to fix some of the shortcomings on users’ “wish lists.” The most important shortcoming is the inability to cut and paste data in the time entry tab. Doing so causes the data validation formulas to be overwritten, which raises the risk of input errors. As a result, users have to manually re-enter data that could easily be cut and pasted.
