Me: I'm divorced after being with the same woman for for just about my entire adult life, 25+ years. And yes, I was faithful (at least one of us were). I'm in my early 50's. Situation: Dating is hard these days compared to when I was last on the dating scene. At least back then it seemed easier because things didn't seem as complicated as they do now. Tried the (normal) dating websites and that turned out to be a bust. You wink, flirt or send a message to someone and 9 times out of 10 there is absolutely no response. Then people who contact you usually have either an ulterior motive or are unrealistic. Couldn't get over the ones that would answer back and after a few emails suddenly you never hear from them again. I guess they got a better offer in the meantime. Usually after they've asked what I do for a living or similiar that would indicate my "status". I say status because I actually had one respond saying that she was moving on because she needed someone that could elevate her status to a higher level. I found that interesting because based upon what I read about her and what she wrote in her emails, I was at a higher level in my life. But I'm not one to pass judgement. Especially since we never talked or met face to face. A good majority were interested in what type of toys I may or may not have such as motorcycles, quads, motorhome, jet skis, etc. When I was younger these would have been called Gold Digger traits.
Then we have the ones that winked or flirted at me first. 9 out of 10 of these were questionable to say the least. What I mean by this is that usually people who contacted me first on any of these sites where way to young. Christ I have daughters in their age group. The other big thing is that they want you to contact them via some webserver. I got in the habit of waiting a day, and in almost every case if you look at their profile the next day it's gone. I always found it interesting how someone would send a message but when you look to see who's looked at your profile they weren't listed. Sort of tells you that they were spamming, doesn't it? Did finally meet someone after awhile but that turned scary. She became a stalker and started calling me at all hours of the day and night. Started showing up at my place without warning and even took it upon herself to meet my kids. At one point she moved from a place where she was a little over an hour away to just around the corner (less than 5 minutes). Therefore, I don't think that this way of meeting people worked for me.
Club scenes are another issue all together. Talk about a meat market. You get propositioned by all types and I do mean all types. You're squeezed into small places where everyone is drinking (or something else) and their inabitions are gone. These all appear to be people who are looking for one thing and for only one time at that. I was groped more in the few weeks of doing this than during my entire marriage. So much for listening to your friends about where to go and actually going out with them. So this didn't work for me either.
Then there's the old fashioned ways. One of these is to see someone in the course of your day and strike up a conversation and see where it goes. Well this really hasn't worked out because this has resulted in two women that I eventually ended up seeing (at different times of course). The first one who was a 44 year old woman (CdlF) who seemed great. We had wonderful times together then suddenly one day she calls and says she can't do this anymore and it was time to move on. Turns out according to her best friend that she already had picked someone to move on with. Of course I never said anything about finding this out because her happiness was more important than my ego. Then there was the second one. That was a lot of fun as well, but something didn't seem right. Turned out I was right and she was married. According to her not happily but married just the same.
Then we have the other old fashioned method, and that is being set up by friends. Well I was a little more successful at this because I met and dated an older woman for awhile that really seemed to be level headed. Problem was she is 5 hours away and it became extremely difficult to maintain over time.
So there we have it in a nutshell. Now we move on to present day... Friends tell me to check out Craigs List so I do. Wow does that ever open up a whole new can of worms. I started looking at all the different personals and we really run the gamut there.
However, it seems that the majority of the people are men looking for men. Nothing against their lifestyle because who knows. I do have friends that are gay and love their lifestyle. Great for them. They've even tried introducing me to their friends. Never the less this type of listing does seem to be the main search.
Then you have the Transexuals looking for love. Once more nothing against them because who knows. However, I was amazed at how some of them looked in their pictures (if those were in fact their pictures). They could pass for women at first sight. Makes one wonder if you can tell them apart. I have to wonder if I've encountered any at the clubs I went to with my friends. Something to ponder.
I have to admit that I am a little surprised at the sheer volume of people that fit this catagory. I guess you could say that coming to LA has been an eye opening experience for me.
Then you have the men looking for women or women looking for men. Have to say I was terribly disappointed in what was obviously misadvertising. You have all these people who are very vague about their write-ups and it is obvious that the same people are on there with just different ads. The writing gives them away usually. But once again, they are misrepresented in the fact that they are obviously in it for the benefits (usually financial). Some are blatantly asking for it and others are more subtle. You get the gist of what I'm trying to say.
There were a few listings that I actually responded to but never heard back. Guess I was suppose to attach a naked photo, credit card or a payment voucher.
Then we have the one time I placed an ad and boy was I ever shocked. I received so much spam after only 36 hours that I had to take the listing off. I actually quit counting after 70 responses. The depressing part was that after opening each and every response, I couldn't consider any of them to be valid inquiries. Most of them had attachments that were very graphic. Mind you I have no objections to sexy photos but the idea of sending them to a perfect stranger as a first communication was suspicious.
So my question is this... Is there really any such thing as dating and romance in Southern California? Or is it all about the one time only quick gratification? Don't get me wrong because sometimes people may need that. Believe me I can understand because I even considered it because It's been awhile. Sometimes people may need to experiment. Sometimes people may need the quick fix as they say because it's been awhile. Boy do I know about it being awhile.
There appears to be very few (few to none) people out there looking for a serious relationship. Anyway, I don't know what the answer or solution is. I'm still working on the questions.
