Alt. Country/Old-Time Country/Rockabilly (Los Angeles)

I'm a drummer looking to join either an existing band or start one up. Specifically, I want a band that does originals and covers in an Alt.Country/Old-Time/Rockabilly style, maybe with a slightly darker tone; think No Depression rather than Modern Country/Pop. I've played in several Rockabilly bands, but I've always dreamed of being in a nice Alt. Country combo, old-school style.

My dream setup would be me on drums, an upright bass player, electric guitar (prefer guitarists who use tremolo a lot; Semi-hollowbodies are my favorite), a slide player (my favorite country instrument), and maybe someone on vocals and acoustic guitar.

I have a unique drum setup, in that I only play a Piccolo-style snare, no bass drum, no cymbals (although I'm looking into a ride). I mostly play with brushes or hot sticks, never with regular sticks. You MUST be cool with this set-up, as I've had other band-mates not understand it. Mostly I've heard the complaint that they "had to play better" because there were no cymbals and other drums playing to cover up mistakes. I have a good sound, good technique, good timing and feel, and I absolutely love playing with other talented musicians. I can handle most rhythms, and I'm a big fan of Train Songs.

I'm not looking for hired guns or pay-for-play types, just actual musicians who are good at what they do and love to do it. Someday, yes, some gigs will pay us actual money, but I don't count on that; I just want to play live as much as possible. It'd be cool if you had "the look" for this kind of music, a generous ego, and you do it because you have to.

Please send pics and links to anything you might have done in the past, and I'll respond in kind. Looking to get something going by the end of March if possible, start getting some songs down, recording, gigs... that whole thing.

Yoga Girl Music Video (Los Angeles)

In June of 2011, I released a song called Yoga Girl. The song is a 60's inspired blues rock tune with tons of guitar solos and a hip hop vibe to the drums. Five months later, another song called Yoga Girl along with a video was released to YouTube and iTunes. The song had a similar concept, title, and ironically, the same tempo. The makers of the hip hop version provided an A capella mix on their website so I created a remix of the two songs, mixing the music from my version with the lyrics of Fog and Smog's version. The lyrics in the A capella version were edited but they were not pitch corrected or time corrected to fit into the instrumental version of my song. Heavy arms, sharp mind, decorated imagination, feminine center.

I have a drummer, and a guitarist. I'm looking for 2 other positions. 1) a bass player 2)a multi-instrumentalist with a few of the following: guitar and piano (nearly necessary), sound sculpting/percussion/production/violin/pedal steel (some of these would be great but not necessary). Out of these two, I'd like to find somebody to collaborate more on concept, style and character. Somebody who has strong ideas and a partially developed vision that could combine well with mine.

Independent thinking is the antithesis of cliche. Please aspire towards the former. The aim will be a record and stage show difficult to pigeonhole or ignore. It will be a highly ambitious project and all music industry resources will be utilized in the service of vision to make it successful. However, the art is everything. There will be no pandering. We loaned out equipment, helped musicians store their equipment in emergencies, hooked up musicians with deep discounts for things like web services, printing, computer repair, music tech services .... none of which the co-op made a single penny off of. We even drove a guy to a gig one night when his car broke down.

It was all about musicians HELPING other musicians who would in turn help out other musicians AND be involved in using their talents to serve the Silver Lake and Echo Park Community. For six months we gave, gave, GAVE and certain people took, took, TOOK ...... with hardly anyone giving BACK.

Hey, SILVER LAKE and ECHO PARK musicians ! If you want to make this work and give it another try..... we are willing to give it a go (as we musicians say) "one MORE time !!! "

First off, we need a place to operate. Help us find a place! Last time we did this we moved into a business that was struggling and we shared a store front. Neil Stone was the coolest guy. People in nursing homes are starving for good entertainment but the way the nursing homes usually feed that hunger is to give them one musician at a time.... small entertainment (usually about 2 days of of the month). We think our elders deserve more at this time in their lives, the time when they should be receiving more, not less. Let's bring them get to see anymore.

If you like people then you will love doing this. You can't imagine how much joy you can get from performing to people who not only appreciate you...... they need you. You will love doing this even more if you like playing that old timer music... old jazz/R&B/classic oldie rock, Motown... but mostly swing era tunes. This is music that will bring back memories of better days.... because for so many of them their memories are all they have left.

Other musicians involved in this project consider it a privilege and an honor to play for people pushed in on wheelchairs or sickbeds attached to IV units. You know how special it makes you feel to watch an audience like that tapping their feet, swaying back and forth., even singing along? Our goal is to give them a special show .... to go far beyond the kind of music they usually get (which is usually a guy with a Karaoke machine or a small church group, or someone with an acoustic guitar).

Recently, I've been getting many inquiries about voice lessons and hearing that the private voice lesson rate is too high for alot of musicians, singers, actors, etc to pay. SO, I'm putting together small (4 - 5 ppl only) vocal performance classes that will be very affordable - about 1/3 of the cost of a private hour lesson. The class will run for 8 weeks at a time and will be continuous. This will enable all auditioning persons to get solid vocal technique and work on audition repertoire.

We will focus on vocal technique, correct breathing, vocal phrasing, focusing, practice time, image, stage presence, auditioning and self-expression and attaining your goals. We will increase your range through vocal strength exercises which will lead to confidence and personal power; vocal control. We will select songs that are a match for your range and style and determine the key in song selection. I will encourage every student to be their own artist and find their own voice.

Diane Postell received her Bachelor degree in Music Performance from New York University after attending Berklee College of Music. She has been singing professionally for 20 years and has performed everything from folk to Bebop jazz.
Postell released her own solo cd, "What I Got To Say", on which she wrote, arranged and produced most of the songs. She started Postell Productions to assist artists attain their dreams through better vocal control and artist authenticity.
A teacher in various capacities for the past 15 years, Diane Postell has the knowledge, experience, and the talent to develop and strengthen your own individual voice to its full potential. Diane Postell is now accepting students at all levels for voice lessons and songwriting.   Lessons are an hour and meet once a week.   In addition to Diane Postell's years of performance experience, she holds a Bachelors degree in Music Performance from New York University and attended Berklee College of Music as a Music Production major and voice principle.
