Here it is, in near-pristine condition - About the only negative worth mentioning is that it's amost due for the first tune-up, cable adjustments, etc, which need to be done early in the bike's life, as new cables tend to stretch, and require adjustment.

Excellent example of a late 1980's Raleigh, American-made mid-range Men's 10-speed Road bike, in gorgeous Alpen White Pearl. Raleighs have long been noted as things of beauty, and this Classic Technium 400 is no exception! Appears mechanically all-original, with Shimano shifters, gears and derailleurs and Dia Compe side-pull Brakes. Frame is lightweight all-aluminum, non-thermally bonded, in an aircraft-inspired leap in bike-design technology. The bike appears 99% original to me, with newer saddle, newer handle-bar tape, which is showing some abrasion where indicated in the photos, and what may be upgraded lightweight alloy rims.
For a 20 year old Road Bike, this one is VERY clean. Serial Number pinpoints production as March 16, 1989. with this bike being the 30th unit produced during the 6-9 shift that day. Cosmetically it appears closer to 2 years old than 20. There's only minor visible oxidation, most of which can be removed with a good chrome polish. Many metal surfaces still gleam like new. The excellent cosmetic condition is a reflection of careful treatment given it by its former owner(s). Just look at the enlargeable pix showing close-up detail, and you'll see impressive evidence of a very well-cared-for, regularly maintained, quality bicycle. Believe your eyes - it really IS this nice! The paint is well-preserved with only a few small scratches, nicks or dings.

In the late 1970's Raleigh's British manufacturing operation was in a shambles. Unions had become so all-powerful, they could shut the country down at will. This created chaotic, intolerable conditions for many old-line British companies, and at this time, management decided to take production across the Atlantic, in fact, all the way west to Kent, Washington.
There was one main reason for Kent, Washington - it was the home of BOEING AIRCRAFT, and Raleigh management had high hopes of being able to recruit Boeing talent to work on bonding technologies for Raleigh's coming generation of ALL-Aluminum bicycle frames, the all-new "Technium" series, a truly revolutionary new kind of Raleigh bike. The lowest-price Technium weighed in at less than 25 Lbs! For a 20 year old Road Bike, this one is exceptionally well cared-for and CLEAN! Serial Number pinpoints production as 25th/26th week of 1989. The frame has a few areas of scraped-off paint, some moderately-well oxidized. The rusty areas are virtually invisible against the burgundy finish, and have been sealed with clear nail polish/lacquer. The hardware has very little visible oxidation, which can be removed with a good chrome polish.
The excellent mechanical condition and very smooth operation of shifters, cranks, etc, is a reflection of careful treatment given it by its former owner(s). The brakes work superbly, but are noisy. Just look at the enlargeable pix showing close-up detail, and you'll see impressive evidence of a very well-cared-for, conscientiously maintained, riding machine.
This is a medium-large frame bike, with a stand-over height of 33" and saddle height of 36" (both tires fully inflated). The size charts would suggest rider's height be between 5'11" and 6'2". I'm 5'10" and this bike is totally comfortable for me to ride.

This bike is solid and at the price, it's a solid value for the rider who wants a durable, reliable, comfortable Road Bike. If you rebel at spending close to $800 for "hybrid" or "comfort" bikes that ARE NOT built to the standards of even an average Road Bike, just consider this excellent CLASSIC ROAD BIKE made by a World-Class bicycle company, that has withstood the years, and continues to perform nearly flawlessly at 20 years old! It's definitely not perfect, the main flaws being the spots of rust on the frame - the saving grace being that the rust is hardly noticeable, being the same color as the burgundy paint that comprises the factory finish.
The bike is comfortable to ride for however many miles you wish. It feels light and very easy to handle. The shifters have detents that help you position the shifter precisely for the gear setting you want. Other than the brakes, which squeal when applied firmly (but also bring the bike's speed down rapidly), the bike is very close to silent. As an editor of Velo News wrote recently, "A quiet bike is a safe bike."
There is no Warranty given, other than Seller's word that the bike has been accurately described. Check my feedback rating if you have any question about how past buyers have felt about their transactions with me. This bike belonged for 25 years to a friend who lives right next to the beach, in Southern California. This accounts for the rusty appearance. He rides every day, and he is cheap - he refuses to have to replace gear every few years, so he takes care of what he has. The bike was frequently cleaned and lubed, accounting for its excellent "like new" performance.
Due to its age, it's sold "As-Is" because even the best-maintained mechanicals have to wear out and be replaced sooner or later, and (come on) 30 years is a long time to rely on even Schwinn components!
Can you fully appreciate the value of the bike offered in this listing? - its condition is solid and TURN-KEY, especially good to find in a 30-yr-old bike that looks the part of just another worn-out urban warrior, but in excellent near-new mechanical shape, that will allow you to enjoy riding it for another 30+ years, for less than 30% of the cost to replicate!

To reassure those who have highly sensitive doubtmeters, (Hey I'm one such person too!) I purchased this bike from a friend, John, in Hermosa Beach, California, on September 17, 2009. That day, I started feeling symptoms I suspect were H1N1, (fever, gross fatigue, lots of chest congestion) that lead me to take to bed for almost a full week. Although feeling a ton better, the chest irritation continues to recur intermittently, Thank You.
Anyway, a friend of mine, Frank C., who stands about 6' tall and weighs about 208, rode the bike as you see it in the photos, at Lake Balboa Park in Van Nuys, California on Saturday, October 24, 2009. I was riding a vintage Raleigh Technium, also currently listed on ebay. We covered close to 10 miles in 90 minutes, and the official track report is that Frank loved the way the Schwinn rode, maneuvered, and the ease with which the shifters and brakes operated.
