So far we have a drummer and singer, and I'm a guitarist. Singer is in her later 20s, and the drummer and I are in our earlier 30s. We're all a bit rusty compared to when we practiced constantly as younger musicians. We have 2 or 3 decent originals so far, that need a band together to evolve them into something better. We also are working on some covers in the symphonic genre so as to be a good opening act.
Here's what we're looking for, in order of importance:
For guitarists, it would be nice if you can share lead guitar duties, as I love the dual guitar attack a la Priest, Maiden, etc. One thing I have never seen in a symphonic band is high quality 2-guitar lead tradeoffs. However, this is *not* required. It would be enough if you can hold down solid rhythms, while sounding and looking good. I'd say it's more important that you like melodic metal and the European sound. Yes, the music can be cheesy, but it's also fun and becoming more popular.
We also have an opening for a keyboardist and bass player. We'd prefer at least one of these roles be female as well, but it is not essential. We'd also like the bass player to be able to handle the "growly" vocals, so we can pair you up with the lead singer for the classic beauty-and-the-beast formula. And if you're a keyboardist who happens to be able to growly vocals, that's fine too. The keyboardist is key to the epic sound by doing choir and string backgrounds, and in a perfect world, is technical enough to do solo tradeoffs with the guitars. We're not going to be a prog band but there's the right amount of spice that should be added to this dish.
If you're in music school and looking for something a little fresher and less academic, this could be a good opportunity for you. We have our own talent and resources and can help you get exposure.
From our point of view, there isn't much in LA in terms of female-fronted symphonic metal, and what exists seems not anywhere near as epic as it could be. Most of us work in software, so this is a creative outlet for us that could become serious if it wants to, but really this is more about having fun, because we just happen to be talented enough and can afford to do it. We are serious enough to rent a rehearsal space with every intention to start gigging once we are ready. We are not a cover band but will do a handful of covers early on to help us get started.
Your age is not important as long as you're not a minor. Generally you will need your own transportation, though if you happen to live close to someone else in the band, and were a particularly good fit, we could make an exception and carpool.

We do have several original songs written which is the primary focus of our efforts, but we will also perform a handful of live cover songs from the above mentioned bands. We do have some older demo material available upon request that is not quite indicative of our current sound, but you’ll get the idea.
We ask for serious contenders that are willing to stage dive headfirst into this with passion, and aren’t afraid of starting from the ground up in something original. we play quality equipment. no we're not cork sniffing snobs but, we do realize that generally name brand gear is popular for good reason: reliablility and durability. we use the following gear: orange amps, PRS, gibson, marshall, tama, pearl, bare knuckle pickups, etc. etc. we have a lockout that we move into on the 1st of august that is by the burbank airport (near fry's), which includes a P.A. and a gallien krueger bass rig (so all you need to do is bring a bass to feel it out if you want). the lockout has parking, and 24/7 security including video surveilance and it's air conditioned. we also have use of it every night of the week from 7 PM on.
what we're looking for: a bass player! seriously age isn't of the utmost importance we'd prefer anyone up to their 40's. not sure if anyone over their mid-40's would dig what we're doing or if they could hack a serious band thing. if you're in your 20's and can hang with a bunch of 30 year olds it's all good- bring it. in other words we're not discriminating based on age to a certain exent. you must also ENJOY this type of music. please if you're primarily a country player that's cool, i LOVE country (well, real country willie, buck and merle, etc.) but, i wouldn't fit too well in a country band and i'm not sure i would truly enjoy being in a country band. make sense?
we expect anyone interested to have decent equipment. we have the GK to practice on but, you need a rig to gig with. and if you prefer to use your own stuff to rehearse with that's fine- i do too. it doesn't have the be a $30,000 rig BUT, it needs to be reliable and yur bass needs to stay in tune etc. other than that it's cool. you must also be serious about this. even though we're a bit older and some of us are married, we're going to take a real stab at it- as crazy as some people may think that is. the music industry is changing and it's not totally like it was before. there are different avenues available to us now to get heard that haven't always been here- hence the fact that the RIAA is crumbling. that means practice time is important so you need to be prepared to be on time. we are going to get the music tight, then record and then gig and see what happens. it is a real band situation. and even though it IS fun, it's more than a bunch of guys getting together for jam sessions. all songs are originals.

Some of us "fucking drummers" as well as other musicians, don't have time to get a 9-5 job because they spend all their time practicing their instrument. I've spent the past 9 years spending money mostly on instruments, music classes, and private lessons. Do you know of any other jobs that have 9 years of job training before they get to be paid minimum wage? I sure can't. Fortunately, I haven't had to, but other drummers have to pay thousands of dollars for drums, trucks, gas, sticks, mallets, etc. So personally, no, I would not play for you, I would play for a gig that respected my life-long commitment to my instrument. To pay any musician nothing for their services is the biggest insult possible. The musicians who really love playing music do nothing other than music, and therefore can't afford food, rent, etc. So if you're looking for a non-musician drummer who plays music as a hobby and not a career, by all means don't offer pay. If you want a serious musician, pay. If drummers talk about playing and/or touring with certain groups, employers can look up the groups and go "hey, that's a pretty good band, it has exactly the genre I'm looking for, and the drummer clearly has experience." It's called a resume.
When people say they play all genres, it shows that they're versatile. If you're looking for a specific drummer, then post an ad saying "I need this specific drummer". I'm not going to post an ad saying "I play Latin jazz only", because then someone looking for a rock and roll drummer passes me up. So we list everything we can do. Again, it's called a resume. Drummers aren't applying to be YOUR drummer, they're applying to be a drummer anywhere.
This Barry Squire guy has it right, but you have misinterpreted it (though I'm suspecting a misquote, as the last phrase doesn't make grammatical sense). "Exposing yourself as much as you can" includes drummers posting up all the genres they play in. If a drummer posts "I can play a) b) c) d), and e)" and an employer sees it and says "well, we need a drummer who plays c), and we have that other gig that needs e)," voila, drummer gets jobs.

For the past 11 years I have been teaching vocal technique to improve students' performance and ease of singing through proper breathing, body strengthening and stretching, facing psychological obstacles, and vocal exercises to improve flexibility and agility. My students learn a comprehensive body and mind approach to singing based on classical bel canto technique.
My students sing all genres of music and range from beginners to conservatory graduates to recording artists. Vocal technique relates to the human body, not a specific style of music. So breathing properly and producing sound in the most efficient way is required for all singers. My lessons are very unique in design. All the fundamentals of the guitar are broken down into easy to understand mathematics, and after you learn the basics of simple chord structure and finger strength, it is easy to move on at your own pace depending on how much time you want to give to me and the instrument.
I can offer this guarantee: things will be as good as they can be from my end. Without trying to sound arrogant, I believe strongly in the idea that there are many excellent guitarists out there – but hardly any good teachers. Its one thing to PLAY, and another to CONVEY. I am a great player, but I am exceptional at conveying the information to my students. You DO NOT leave my lessons unsure of the material that was covered. I have implemented a great system using my computer and CDRWs to capture what was covered in the lesson for you to take home with you, and play on your computer or stereo. With that you have the live guitar to reference for times when it’s difficult to remember what went on during the lesson. Bring the CD back the next time, and we add the new lesson.
I have said before how learning the guitar can be related with learning to paint. At first, I show you all the possible different colors that you can play with. When you know them, you’ll want to use them, but you don’t know about brush stroke or technique. After I show you how to properly apply color you may wonder….”well, how does this color work with that color?” or “If I started with this color, do I guess and play around with the others to see what works or is there a system to knowing what colors will work well together before you even start to paint?”
I teach you all the basics, all the physical techniques, all the math, you will comprehend the instrument and, with discipline and practice, be playing what you want to play by the end of September. Basically, I am confident enough to say its ALL IN YOUR HANDS. If you give me your time, it is physically impossible for you to not play and understand perfectly. My previous teachers tended to waste time with non-relatable scales and little song parts that I had to master from THEIR favorite players.
That’s not what we will be doing. I have edited the entire process down to the essentials so lessons are a seamless and flowing stream of comprehension that you will look forward to. Learn a new set of skills and exercises, hear a song that I choose that has elements of those exercises in them, and go home with the burned CD of your exercises, the relatable song, and what to practice. Everything makes sense, everything goes together, nothing is skipped or missed and the only thing left up to chance is your dedication.
And that’s the bottom line. Guitar isn’t for everyone. I will admit people have come to me with a misplaced agenda in their desires to learn the instrument….and they go home failed because their heart wasn’t in it. There is nothing in the world like playing the guitar.
