At the Glendale Humane Society, volunteers bottle feed newborns found in the area, but these little ones represent just a fraction of the stray kittens county wide, who have to be put down if they can't be cared for.
Shelters have set up foster programs so people can "adopt" the kittens until they're 10 to 12 weeks old.
It's a fulltime commitment.
The kittens have to be burped, kept warm, fed and watched.
Officials say the work can go on for weeks, because the kittens are just like babies.
Often volunteers are asked to take more than one kitten.
