Paid Intern: Biomedical Technology Market Research (Los Angeles - Valencia)

The Alfred Mann Foundation for Biomedical Engineering is seeking a Biomedical Engineering student for a paid internship position for ~15 (up to 20) hours per week. This is a market research position, not an engineering position, however the candidate will be exposed to cutting edge medical device, biotechnology and pharmaceutical technology and the skills in a biomedical curriculum will support understanding of the projects.

There is some flexibility in the exact days and times when the intern would work, however there needs to be consistency, at least from quarter/semester to quarter/semester. The primary responsibilities include market research for emerging medical devices such as competitive analysis, market size determination and clinical assessment. The selected candidate will have experience, comfort and understanding of online based research that will be used to source market statistics, competitive data and other information. Fluency in use of PubMed is important and the applicant must be able demonstrate first hand, current and top of the class skills in this area.

The intern will complete a wide range of analytical tasks supporting the due diligence research that is executed to determine the potential for successful commercialization of a wide range of medical technologies. Outcomes of this research are used to support the allocation of financial resources to fund development activities at elite universities. The research will be performed primarily on medical device technology and to a much lesser extent pharmaceuticals and biologics in a wide range of clinical subspecialties.

The intern must have stellar verbal, written and oral communication skills, and must have experience using and be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Experience with and proficiency in graphics programs like Illustrator or Quark and Photoshop are a desired (but not essential) adjunct to the scientific and analytical skills as they have been shown to support the ability to convey complex data in a format easily understandable for a wide range of stakeholders.

Please send your resume and a cover letter about your interest in this position. Please do not call about this opportunity as we are not staffed to respond to inquiries by telephone.

Part Time Position
This is not a full time position, nor will it expand into a full time position. In addition, enrollment in a BME program or a MBS (Masters in Biological Science) or an aligned graduate program is critical for selection. Enrollment in an allied basic science curriculum such as chemistry or biochemistry may also be considered. It is the desire to have the intern physically present at the Alfred Mann Foundation for Biomedical Engineering in Valencia, California for the working hours although some accommodation may be made for telecommuting for part of the hours. Preference will be given for a candidate who resides close to the Foundation. The position reports to the Vice President, Commercialization.

Payment
This intern position pays $15 per hour.

Location:
The Alfred Mann Foundation for Biomedical Engineering is located in Valencia, California, approximately 40 minutes north of Los Angeles in the 167 acre Mann Biomedical Technology Park where this position would be headquartered

Overview of the Foundation for Biomedical Engineering:
Mr. Alfred E. Mann, a successful serial entrepreneur for more than 40 years in Southern California has endowed the philanthropic Alfred Mann Foundation for Biomedical Engineering (AEMFBE) to assist with the establishment of 10 - 12 research and development institutes at elite universities across the United States and in other countries outside the US to expedite the commercialization of lifesaving biomedical technologies. Each Institute, once selected, receives an initial philanthropic endowment of at least $100 million for the development of medical technologies. Three Alfred Mann Institutes have been initiated: University of Southern California became operational in 2001, the Technion (Israel) in 2006 and Purdue University in 2007. Two additional universities have been awarded and their names will be disclosed in 2009. Ultimately, the AEMFBE will be responsible for facilitating collaboration between the Alfred Mann Institutes at the respective campuses and will provide specialized services such as marketing, business development, manufacturing development guidance and legal counsel.

Mr. Mann dedicated his career to improving the quality of life for those suffering from debilitating medical conditions and now desires to focus his philanthropic efforts on the continued development of innovative medical solutions.
