Overview of Program:

The Institute for Educational Advancement's Apprenticeship Program is a residential summer program designed to nurture and support exceptionally able high school youth through optimally matching selected students with eminent scientists, engineers, professionals, and artists. For three or six weeks, Apprentices work with their Mentor on a research project that will allow them to gain hands-on experience in a field about which they are passionate, while giving them the experience of living in a college dormitory.

Job Description:

Resident Advisors work in conjunction with the Mentor and the Apprenticeship Program Coordinator to provide a meaningful summer experience for the students. They reside with the students in residence halls on a college campus and transport them to and from their research sites on a daily basis as well as on weekly field trips. The RA develops and facilitates recreational activities and supervises students to ensure their safety.

Qualifications:

-Age 25 or older with valid driver’s license
-Experience supervising students in a camp or school environment preferred
-Ability to work with students, staff, Mentors and parents
-Highly creative and enthusiastic
-Able to carry out duties utilizing a high level of individual initiative
-Ability to work independently and without direct supervision
-Possess excellent oral and written communication skills
-Handle all internal and external contacts in a professional manner

Responsibilities:

-Supervise students at all times when they are not with the Mentor
-Maintain order in the student housing facility
-Plan and implement major free-time events or activities
-Transport students in rental vehicles to research sites on a daily basis and for field trips
-Assist with student arrival by meeting and/or driving students in personal or rental vehicles from the airport or train station to the site
-Manage petty cash and miscellaneous expenses
-Act as the first contact for students experiencing difficulties
-Act as a role model in both attitude and behavior
-Be on 24-hour call in case of emergency
-Consult regularly with the Mentor and Apprenticeship Program Coordinator about the welfare of the students academically, socially, and emotionally
-Advise the Mentor and the Apprenticeship Program Coordinator of any serious disciplinary, emotional or academic problem(s) a student may be having as soon as you are aware of the problem(s) and handle any such problem(s) according to the protocol established by the Apprenticeship Program Coordinator
-Be available on the final day to ensure that the student housing facilities are left clean and free from damage
-Assist with the completion of any evaluations
-Other related duties as assigned

Time Commitment:

Training will commence in mid-June. All Resident Advisors are required to attend two training sessions at the Institute’s office.

There are two RA positions available for the three-week program and two positions available for the six-week program. Dates for the three week program are Saturday, June, 28 2008-Saturday, July 19 and dates for the six week program are Saturday, June 28-Saturday, August 9, 2008. RAs will need to commit their time completely to the program during the specified dates.

Compensation:

Position includes a stipend ranging from $1,300-$1,500 (for the 3 week program) or $2,600-3,000 (for the 6 week program) based on experience, plus food and housing for the duration of the program.
