A+ Learning Center is an academically focused after school program, offering grade level enrichment classes in a variety of areas. Our students are mainly Chinese/Taiwanese children who attend schools in the Arcadia and San Marino districts. A position for a writing workshop teacher is currently open.
Writing workshops meet for 2 hours once a week, and are designed for grades 4 through 7. During the academic year, classes meet from 4-6 pm throughout the week and from 1-3 or 3-5 on Saturdays. Teachers are responsible for designing their own curriculum, although we have a library of resources on which they may draw. Class planning and some paper grading are required outside of class.
In the writing workshop, students produce self-generated compositions. Except in the case of vocabulary or grammar work, handouts and workbooks are not used. Lessons should challenge the student to think independently and express himself on paper in an articulate way. Writing workshop curriculum covers descriptive, narrative, personal, responsive, and persuasive modes. It is most important that our students learn to form opinions and organize their thoughts in a way that constantly increases in sophistication.
Qualifications
To be considered for this position, the candidate must have:
1. At least two years of demonstrated teaching experience. This work must have occurred in a classroom for which the candidate was solely responsible. Substitute or assistant work does not qualify.
