Summary:
Under direct supervision provides moderately complex support services to the Environment, Health & Safety Office in one or more of the following programs: Radiation, Chemical and Biological Safety, Occupational & Environmental Health and Safety, Fire Safety, Hazardous Waste Management, and Hazardous Materials Emergency Response.
Job Duties:
* Inspects and monitors equipment, work areas, and work practices and procedures for compliance with established safety rules, regulations, and Institute policy.
* Provides services related to handling, storage and disposal of hazardous, radioactive and biological materials.
* Sorts and classifies excess chemical, radioactive and biological wastes; transfers wastes to designated waste storage area.
* Assists in conducting laboratory safety inspections on a regular basis; perform routine inspections of fume hoods; evaluates and documents fume hood face velocity.
* Conducts moderately complex surveys of Institute facilities and operations for hazardous conditions; makes notes of deficiencies in life safety code requirements.
* Operates, maintains and calibrates health and safety monitoring and testing equipment.
* Records data and assists staff in acquiring regulatory information.
* Posts safety guidelines, signs, official announcements and related environmental and health and safety information and communications.
* Conducts training programs in technical areas as required.
* Investigates and submits reports on incidents involving environmental and health and safety matters.
* Responds to emergencies involving hazardous materials.
* Performs monthly fire extinguisher inspections and makes note of any deficiencies; makes arrangements for recharging and testing.
* Performs radiation surveys and monitors radiation levels.
* Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
Minimum Requirements:
Education and experience equivalent to: Bachelors degree in the sciences OR Associates degree and two years relevant experience OR four years relevant experience in environmental health and safety. Experience in the handling of hazardous materials. Good verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work independently. Ability to operate a personal computer and various software programs. Ability to wear a respirator and work under strenuous conditions. Ability to lift 50 lbs, on occasion, must manipulate 55-gallon drums, lift boxes, and push or pull carts with materials and supplies.
A background investigation and post-offer physical exam are required.
