Verdict: Tight timings and lots of overclocking potential


Corsair is one of the leading suppliers of enthusiast memory and the 3200XL is its flagship PC3200 product.

That's because it uses very high-quality DRAMs and a specially designed PCB to allow it to either run at a low frequency (400MHz) with incredibly low latency timings (2 - 2 - 2 - 5), or at a higher frequency if you're prepared to increase the latency timings. At 400MHz it outperformed all the other low-latency PC3200 DDR DIMMs, though to be honest, you'd be hard-pressed to notice any difference, unless you have cybernetically enhanced eyesight.

Unsurprisingly, it can't run faster than 400MHz with these timings, and after a lot of playing around we found its maximum stable overclock was 480MHz at 2.5 - 3 - 3 - 8, which is still faster than some PC4400 modules such as the GeIL (see p75). However, this is a rather disappointing overclock, as the GeIL, OC2 and Patriot all ran stably at 500MHz.

While the Corsair memory is more than double the price of basic PC3200 DDR it's much more overclockable and, even if you don't overclock, it's slightly faster because of its lower latency timings. So if you're looking for the ultimate in flexibility for your Athlon 64 rig, the Corsair is a great choice.

the battery does not hold a charge but as long as it is plugged in it works completely fine. The computer itself is about 3 years old and has some cosmetic blemishes with the keyboard. The screen itself is great. The case has some loose parts like the back plate is taped down because it is loose(does not affect performance as all.
