We are partnering with Nike's Let Me Play initiative to build a campaign using athletics as a catalyst for powerful social change. We believe sports can change individuals and communities, and we are supporting and creating programs to do just that.

About the Internship

Community Organizers in the Let Me Play Leadership Society are the heart and soul of the YouthNoise Let Me Play campaign. The Leadership Society is a network of leaders who are taking the spirit of Let Me Play and translating it into real-world impact through community-based projects and events.

Los Angeles Marketing Dynamo Needed For Yelp.com!

Dynamo? Rockstar? Badass? Sound like you? Good, cuz you are exactly who we're looking for to lead the Los Angeles charge for Yelp.com! As our Director of Marketing/Community Manager, you'll be the creative guru working your magic and doing whatever it takes to fuel the growing community of active yelpers in the City of Angels. You'll be spearheading dynamic and innovative marketing campaigns and creating useful, funny and cool content for the site. You'll be seeking out local on and offline promotional tie-ins and you'll be working harder than you ever have, but you'll never have had more fun doing it. In essence, you’ll be the "Mayor" of LA Yelp and responsible for taking us to the next level of success on the West Coast. Think you have it in ya? Good, read on...

Could it be me?
It sure might if you possess all of the following qualities...

-You're one of those people who just "get it" and if you don't, you know exactly who to reach out to to make it happen.
-You live to write and write to live. It's what gets you up in the morning and makes you disregard the clock at night. You know who you are. Pencils down.
-You have a fire in your belly. You walk through walls. You take no prisoners. In a nutshell, you're the definition of driven. Even when no one is watching. Especially then.
-You're the ultimate social dynamo and out every night. You're the hub of your social world. You know everyone. Everyone knows you and you feel comfortable in a variety of different social scenes. Basically, wallflowers need not apply.
-You have more than a few years of post-graduate professional writing and marketing experience under your belt and the contacts and oomph to prove it. (Existing Yelp community managers have 5 to 15 years)

So what would I be doing?
So happy you asked. Here's the dealio...
-Writing, writing and more writing! You'll be penning localized Weekly Yelp newsletters and scribing inspiring reviews daily. You'll be championing persuasive pitches to venue owners and marketing partners.
-Event planning. From start to finish. You'll be conceptualizing, wheelin 'n' dealin, planning and executing cool, fun and buzz-worthy (big wow factor!) events/parties.
-Marketing outreach. You'll be coming up with cool tie-ins for key local organizations, executing grassroots marketing endeavors and bartering Weekly Yelp sponsorships for the promotion of Yelp.
-Socializing and adventuring. Remember that part about being out every night? Yep, we weren't kidding. You'll be meeting up with yelpers, networking nightly and attending events galore. You'll see and be seen. In the scene. Be the Mayor. You're always on.
-Communication. Since you'll be leading our Los Angeles efforts, you'll be accountable for stellar communication with your peers and family back at Yelp HQ in San Francisco.

Interested? Of course you are!

Please submit the following to CMjobs@yelp.com (Please use YELP’S LA DIRECTOR OF MARKETING/COMMUNITY MANAGER in your subject line):

-A personable cover letter/note showcasing your writing skills and general sass and style.
-A resume showcasing your relevant experience
-A link to your (full and interesting) Yelp profile. Remember, if you’re gonna “own” LA Yelp, we at least wanna see a few reviews first.

In particular, we're looking for someone familiar with Associated Press style, the inverted pyramid and other narrative styles.
intern (editorial/research) for la-based magazine writer (silverlake)

Internship (editorial/research) available with national magazine writer/author who holds contributing editorships and contract masthead positions. Please don't apply if you're not available to start in August, and please live in Los Angeles, own a laptop with access to broadband Internet, and have a means of transportation. It's also preferable if you have not interned at other publications and/or worked other jobs in media or entertainment.

The successful applicant will have likely just finished his or her undergrad education, though feel free to apply if you're at the end of your degree program--as long as you have time and daily availability via e-mail. Please share interests in: technology/gadgets, travel, food, culture (from mainstream film/TV to books, serious music to one-hit wonders), health (including recent medical news), style, nutrition, design, social trends, literary nonfiction, and essay/memoir. Tasks will introduce you to traditional and unusual magazine and newspaper research methods, fact-checking, copy-editing, writing in different tones, different journalistic forms, the writer's marketplace, how to pitch, editor communiques, putting together book proposals, transcribing, interviewing subjects (from the famous to the obscure), etc.

There will also be light clerical assistance--occasionally calling in products, meeting PR reps, placing calls and e-mails, sending out packages. But this is more substantive writing/journalism mentorship and exposure than personal assistance--especially if you are passionate about pitching and writing every day. I've had smart and caring mentors, so I'm devoted to helping the right person get started on what can be a very liberating, challenging, and exciting career path. What else? Familiarity with Nexis and other popular research tools helps. Also know how to work with and have a good sense of the Web--particularly the most important media and entertainment blogs. Please, too, read lots of newspapers and magazines and have favorites (as well as knowledge of specific article formats) for which you would like to write.

Successful applicant will receive personalized advice on how to kickstart a freelance writing career tailored to specific interests as well as journalism-school and MFA-curriculum reading suggestions, skill-building writing/editing assignments (if desired), and personal writing analyses (to help you get published sooner rather than later). Other perks: I offer help with creating work portfolios (what clips to send, cover letters, etc.) and with meeting helpful people--sources and editors. I cover the real facts about freelance writing as a craft and business. So you'll get a lot out of this if you're available and hungry, including a strong reference and bylined writing samples. The most important thing is to be extremely passionate about writing for publication asap. It works best if you're 100% sure you want to work in this field right away and have done the necessary prep work (obsessively read numerous publications, tried some journalism if only for yourself, and paid attention to grammar and syntax along the way).

Please also take initiative and work well independently. Being professional, articulate, and accurate as well as flexible with time zones--particularly Eastern Standard Time--will help. Deadlines are fast, and most editors work in NY. 75% of work can be done from home, eventually, but twice-weekly meetings of a few hours are very likely and often helpful for both of us.

Unpaid or college credit available through all universities. Potential for small payments--for helpful contributions with research or lengthy transcriptions. What you'll gain in experience, connections, and exposure, however, is well worth your time -- much more than answering phones, getting coffee, and faxing contracts at a magazine owned by a conglomerate. Just please don't apply if you already have a taxing full-time job or plan to work in other fields and just write on the side. No one understands the need to make money more than a writer in my position. But this job just fits students and others who have time to spare and a focused writing goal, however they can finance it all.

Prefer younger people who lack opportunities as opposed to career-changers who have held numerous jobs and don't need to build many of these skills. Enjoy literary as well as consumer publications -- and understand the need to write for both worlds. Let's chat over e-mail and phone so the right ones come to interview soonest. Interns usually stay from three to six months--I like to usher you out of this and into other work as soon as you're ready. Lastly, it helps if you have written for publication, and if you have practical journalistic or essayistic writing samples to send along with a resume and cover letter that explains why you are ready to pursue this career. [Please don't apply without writing samples.!]

Finally, don't feel the need to stand out with unusual e-mails. Just write a proper letter: say hello, tell me your name, why you'd like to do this, what you read, and what kind of writer you think you might like to become. Past interns have scored numerous paid articles in national publications as well as found and retained work at strong magazines.

Orato.com Is Paying For 1st Person Stories

Since its launch in June 2006, Orato.com has given more than 4200 correspondents worldwide a platform in which to tell their stories. Recently recognized as one of the top 12 news websites in the world by the 2008 Webby Awards (which have been called the Oscars of the Internet by the New York Times), Orato.com has attracted up to 100,000 visitors in one day.

Experience has taught us that the most compelling stories are written in the words of those who experience or witness an event. And so Orato.com is now paying for true, timely stories written through the eyes of those who were ‘there’! It’s our aim to become the world’s leader in unprejudiced, 1st person story-telling. Building on an annual audience of nearly 4 million visitors, we are taking Orato.com to a whole new level by paying for 1st person, human interest stories – stories which grip the emotions, challenge reality, and celebrate the resilience of the human spirit.

We want to be a competitive option for anyone with a great human-interest story to tell, and we are giving our correspondents a number of opportunities to earn money. In addition to selling the story directly to Orato.com, correspondents can benefit from a ‘tipping’ function that allows visitors to tip the author.

As a multi-media platform we put a lot of value on video footage, audio recordings and photos which complement a story. The more compelling the story, the more we’ll pay. If you have a personal connection to an event that’s breaking headlines or an extraordinary event that begs a global audience, send your true human-interest story idea to http://www.orato.com/oratopitch
