This raft is totally awesome. It is in brand new condition. It was built in '82 by the original company that made "Elliot" rafts, a premere builder of life rafts. That company was sold, and now a company in Columbus Ohio handles the servicing and certification of these rafts. The place in Ohio that now owns the company, told me that when these rafts are taken care of, that they "last forever",... his words.
If you were to buy a raft like this new today you would be looking at a cost of several thousand dollars. The reason I'm selling this for only $300 is because it is too big for my boat... it takes up too much room.
Many people have called who are interested in this raft, and at some point the conversation turns to the issue of certification. Life rafts by law must be certified every year, if (and only if) they are used for commercial purposes. The certification and the cost associated with certification is something that is unavoidable if it's used commercially.
The Certification process differs from year to year... This is what I remember... this may not be exact, but it's close and I can give you phone numbers of the places that perform the certifications. The tanks (that auto fill the rafts) are looked at once every years. Every three years they inflate the raft to twice it's normal PSI to check it for leaks. The flares are replaced every three years. The food and water and sunscreen and such are replaced every five years. Now, another requirement is that any raft that is over ten years old must have the double PSI test done every year. If you bring it to the same company every year, many will give you some savings for your being a loyal customer. With the fact that new rafts (like this one) cost several thousand dollars; you would still save by buying a raft in good condition, even if it's older than ten years. The cost for certification is roughly $25 per # of persons the raft is rated for.
IF the raft is used for private use you don't have to get it certified at all. You could deal with it yourself. Also the food and water that lasts 10 years is really not necesary if you are using it on a boat that stays within a hundred miles or so of the cost (such as So. cal). If your boat sinks and you need to go to the raft the Coast Guard will (usually) pick you up in an hour or less if you're anywhere near the coast. Hence, you don't need all the provisions and such; you just need to stay afloat for a short period of time. Now, if you happen to be sailing in the Transpac Race to Hawaii, then yes you would want the food in the raft... but you could pack that yourself. When you really think about it, what would you rather have, some food that is a few years old, or some food that you bought right before you left?
So then, in considering a raft, if it's to be used commercially, then the certification is what it is no matter what... and the cost of certification may be a little bit less for the first few years on a new raft, you will still save a couple thousand by going with the raft I'm selling here... even though the 2xPSI test must be done annually. If you are wanting the raft for private use, all you need to know is that the thing holds air. The raft in the pictures is the raft I'm selling for $300 holds air just fine. I inflated the raft at night and took the pictures the next morning. Also, the places that certify the rafts want to sell (everyone that brings in a used raft) a brand new one so, when you first contact them, they usually try to tell people that the older rafts are too old, no good, etc... but that is not true, in fact, once they realize that you don't want to buy a new one then they will be more than happy to certify any raft they can. The man who works at the (certification) place said that this raft I am selling (and I quote) "last forever". So don't be discouraged by all the certification misinformation... this raft is fine.
I inflated the raft myself (the actual one pictured) the other night and the next morning it was still totally inflated and on the inside it was bone dry. The picture that is mostly black is of the floor inside. I took these pics the next morning. The raft has all kinds of high tech features such as rain catchers, anti-drift pockets, sea anchor, lights, inflatable floor for insulation, closing doors to keep wind rain and cold out, insulated ceiling, and more. This is the real deal in life rafts. It comes with a 2pc fiberglass shell that the raft is stored in... also there is the tank for the auto inflate. The shells alone retail for over $300. This is a totally awesome deal. I'm selling so cheap due to the confusion and misinformation surrounding the cert process, and again, it's too big for my boat. This raft will be perfect for a boat that is say, 40 ft and over. It says that it holds 15 people but that is like for a true life or death situation... really it would be comfortable at "family size" numbers, say 5 or 6 adults, maybe a child or three and a dog.
This is a super deal that may just save your life as well as every body on your boat. Obviously the hope is that you never need to go to the life raft but it is nice to know that it is there. This raft is in basically "New" condition as it was preserved so well in the storage shell.

2005, 20' Crestliner 2085, Pontoon Boat like NEW.

We purchased this boat in late 2006, brand new, and have only taken it out a handful of times. It is very clean and we will be putting photos up soon.

Unfortunately we are so busy with work and life these days we have not taken the boat out for OVER a year! This would be a great family boat, because it is excellent for fishing trips, but we have also taken it to the river.

On a lake, for instance, the boat holds 12 and on choppier waters, such as in the river, you should probobly carry no more than 9 individuals.

Boating is a great cost effective way to spend some down time with friends and family; we used to take the boat out on San Diego Bay and watch concerts at the Embarcadero stage--we saw a sold out Radio Head show for free!

Laird Hamilton is one of the true surfing pioneers who has opened has opened up the ocean to new an innovative ways of riding waves. He has been and continues to be an awesome ambassador for the sport of surfing whether it be prone paddle, stand up paddle, tow-in, or distance paddling. I would venture to say that that at some point or another, every surfer has gazed into a photo of a Laird-worthy wave and mind surfed it at least momentarily.

Stand up paddling is a truly awesome sport. Anyone can do it on any body of water. It has introduced countless people to the ocean and inland waterways and helped them to develop a love for the ocean the same way that surfers have for centuries. As I reflect on this, my thoughts wander to one of my favorite surf videos ever, Step Into Liquid. This video highlights all of the excitement that surfers feel when they get out in the waves. With stand up paddling, to a degree, that same stoke can be felt on lakes and rivers hundreds of miles from the ocean. It�s exciting and the smiles tell the story.

Is stand up paddling here to stay as Laird proclaims? In my opinion, guaranteed! Once a surfer, always a surfer, and stand up padding is bringing the stoke to both inland paddlers and those by the ocean. It�s amazing how many people who live by the ocean and never have wanted to surf before get on a stand up paddle surfboard and discover a love for the water they had never before experienced. In my opinion, even lake paddlers are surfers at heart. It is not uncommon for someone who begins stand up paddling �just for the fitness� keeps to the harbor until a wave on the horizon catches their eye and lets draws them into the surf. I can�t help but be excited for all those who have discovered the magic of the ocean and the waves.

Stand up paddling carries with it a huge responsibility to represent the sport honorably and display a standard etiquette that goes above and beyond the norm. For stand up paddling, the old saying, �it only takes one bad apple to ruin the bunch,� has a lot of truth to it. Stand up paddling is definitely not a license to jump into surf lineups and to grab all the waves that come through. Such actions are frowned upon by prone paddle and stand up paddle surfers alike. The truth is, stand up paddle industry leaders are continuously trying to find out how to communicate that to new stand up paddlers. Stand Up Paddle Surfing Magazine is always looking for various ways to promote proper etiquette on the water.

In the article, there is mention of stand up paddlers surfing together. I personally think it�s great! Stand up paddling has revived that sense of community among surfers that has been lost over the years due to competitiveness and aggressive behavior on the water. Should a group of stand up paddlers move in and take over a surf break? No way! However, when a group of paddlers go off together to lesser known peaks or to previously unsurfed waves, it�s one of those magical moments of community, good times, and smiles� even if it�s in mushy knee high shorebreak. Stand up paddle surfing shines brightest at the outer reefs where others don�t venture to surf or on the less desirable waves that prone paddlers shy away from. This is part of the romance of the sport.

For those who choose to join their local lineups, always remember that you have to show respect to earn respect. Purchasing a big board does not buy you the right to catch more waves or dominate the lineup beit a prone or stand up paddle surfboard. Respect as a stand up paddler has to be earned one session at a time, not one wave at a time. Sometimes you may have a one-wave or no-wave session out of respect for the others in the lineup. Such is the case for prone paddle surfers and, in my opinion, such should be the case for stand up paddlers as well.

The stand up paddle industry is exciting and evolutionary. From the surfer side, it�s opened up the ocean to the world. From a commercial side, it�s a market, myself included, thirsty for new innovations and gear. Best of luck to Laird and his new company, and all other companies that are out there fueling the stoke!
