The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications and characteristics:
Juris Doctor degree and a member in good standing of the State Bar of California.
Prior experience in dependency law or trial experience helpful but not required.
Ability to effectively and respectfully communicate with children, teens, their families and caregivers.
Maintain professional and effective relationships with court personnel and coworkers.
CLC attorneys work closely with supervisors, social work investigators, various subject matter experts, peer advocates, support staff, and other CLC attorneys. Attorneys provide client directed advocacy and legal advice to children, age 0-21, alleged to be victims of abuse and neglect. Individualized, independent investigation and critical analysis of each case serves as the foundation for advocacy. Our attorneys work effectively with CLC social work investigators and peer advocates, are knowledgeable of all relevant dependency case law, statues and court rules, use effective trial and courtroom presentation skills, negotiate with other counsel using sound case analysis and judgment, prepare witnesses, and apply evidentiary rules and objections.
CLC attorneys have a thorough knowledge of dependency law and a general knowledge of law in related areas as well as a variety of subject matter areas such as child development, mental health, special education, trauma, domestic violence, immigration, substance abuse and more.
CLC attorneys engage available resources to represent and advocate for our clients’ legal interests, including educational resources, medical providers, mental health professionals, Regional Center resources, community based services providers, and other legal experts or consultants.
Benefits Package and How to Apply
The Attorney position starts at $70,000 depending on experience. There is also an additional $5,000 annual stipend paid to our Lancaster-based attorneys. CLC has an excellent benefits package that includes 15 PTO days and 10 sick days in the first year. In addition, we observe all California state holidays and have generous Family and Medical Leave, retirement and health plans.
