Antique Tribal CAST BRONZE BELL from Nigeria, possibly from the19th century. It is decorated with very small abstract human and animal figures in bas-relief, and with borders of crosshatching.
Traditional African Cast Bronze items were made by metalsmiths using the lost-wax casting method, the best way of preserving fine modeling and detail. Each piece is unique as the mold is only usable once.
African Ritual Bells were used for proclaiming a sacred presence as well as neutralizing hostile or harmful forces. Bells were also used as tools of communication, as portable instruments for conveying important messages, and as a form of currency.
