Offered For Sale is a beautifully refurbished circa early 1970's FREJUS Professional road bike from Torino, Italy in original paint/finish. This bike was sold new via Tom Avenia in Manhattan, NYC and spent a number of years racing in New York City before a long slumber. About 12 in years ago, it underwent a complete disassembly and rebuild/refurbishment. The frame is constructed of Reynolds 531 tubing and Campagnolo 1010 dropouts. Campagnolo Nuovo Record groupset is believed to be original to the bike, as are the Universal centerpull Mod. 61 brakes. At the time of refurbishment, the original Campagnolo Record high flange hubs were laced to Velo Orange polished box-section clincher rims. The original brake pads were replaced with Scott/Mathauser and all bearings re-packed, cables and housing replaced, 5-speed Regina freewheel replaced and reproduction Universal brake hoods were fitted. The bike was ridden lightly and again put away before I recently obtained it to prepare it for sale. Fresh cloth bar tape has just been wrapped, a new chain fitted and a pair of Campagnolo toe clips and leather toe straps have been installed. Current tires are Clement Strada LGG in 28mm that show some mileage buty have loads of life left in them. The buffalo leather Cinelli Unicanitor was likely an upgrade at some point in the bike's history.
Rear Campagnolo derailleur is marked PATENT-72. The Campy jockey wheels show relatively low mileage but do have the commonly occurring crack. SOMA offers a nice replacement for these. The Ambrosio Gran-Prix stem measures 120mm in extension. The matching Ambrosio bars measure 38cm center-to-center and are plugged with the rare (and at one time very expensive) GASLO aluminum bar caps. The 144 BCD Nuovo Record crankset has 175mm length arms and a monstrous 54T outer chainring (for NYC park and criterium racing) and a 42T inner ring.
The frame is in lovely original condition although it does show some scars typical for a 50 year old race bike. There are some scratches and chips, most notably on the drive side chain stay, and a very small area of some light surface paint bubbling on the top tube. It appears that some (if not all) of the decals were not covered in a clear coat...as evidenced by the loss of the Reynolds 531 decal on the top tube and the flaking/movement of the World Champ bands that typically frame the white paint panels on the seat tube. FREJUS fork decals also show some flaking/loss.
Top tube measures 57.5cm (center-to-center) and the seat tube measures 60cm (center-to-center)...or roughly 61.5cm to top.
