This is an elegant 1891 German military history titled "Geschichte des deutsch-französischen Krieges von 1870-71" (History of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71) by Graf Helmuth von Moltke, General-Feldmarschall. This is Volume 3 ("Dritter Band") of the "Gesammelte Schriften und Denkwürdigkeiten" (Collected Writings and Memoirs) series, published in Berlin by Ernst Siegfried Mittler und Sohn.
The book is described as the second edition ("Zweite Auflage") and includes an overview map ("Mit einer Uebersichtskarte"). It covers the history of the Franco-Prussian War with an appendix on the alleged war forces in King Wilhelm I's wars.
Physical Description:
This is a premium presentation binding featuring rich burgundy/maroon leather with elaborate gold gilt decorative borders and corner ornaments. The spine displays the title "DEUTSCH FRANZÖSISCHEN KRIEGES" in gilt lettering with decorative raised bands and ornate fleuron designs. The front cover features an impressive royal monogram with a crown - likely "W" for Wilhelm I - surrounded by ornate scrollwork, all executed in gold gilt.
Condition:
The book appears to be in excellent condition for its age. The leather binding shows minimal wear, the gilt decorations are bright and intact, and the spine is solid. The interior pages appear clean with age-appropriate yellowing. There are some handwritten notes/inscriptions visible on the front pages, including what appears to be ownership marks dated 1971.
