Hugh Acton (1925-2018) was an artist and designer, based primarily in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Acton received his MFA from The Cranbrook Art Institute near Birmingham, Michigan where he began his career in furniture design. His innovative designs “The Acton Stacker,” slat bench, and modular furniture systems are hallmarks of mid-century modern design. Acton was a true furniture design innovator whose work blended the best of American craft tradition and Scandinavian mid-century design. He won many design awards.
The coffee table herein offered for sale was a family purchase obtained circa 1955. At that time our family was living near Cranbrook Art Institute, and Acton was studying for his MFA and formulating his early furniture designs. It is believed that this table was an early prototype for Acton's later large circular cocktail tables. The table top is constructed using a terrazzo-like method. The terrazzo is composed of white marble fragments, mother-of-pearl fragments, copper mineral fragments, agate fragments and a fragmented septarian nodule. The three sculpted brass legs are identical to the stereotypical legs found on all of Acton's slat benches. Our research has identified a similar “black granite” Acton coffee table of identical size and leg style, but no others with white terrazzo top. Because of the early date for this piece, it is believed this coffee table is an Acton prototype for later production pieces.
