Deck chair, Dutch original, not a cheap Chinese copy. It is from the elegant art deco luxury ship SS New Amsterdam. Flag ship of the Holland America Lines. Pride of the nation. Largest ship ever built in the Netherlands. Built before the advent of transatlantic jet travel.
This was their best chair, Reserved for first class passengers only… or so it says on the brass plaque. Except during World War II when it would have been used by soldiers.
The foot rest needs repair, but none of the hardware is missing.
Straightforwardly restorable by a woodworker.
These were normally never finished with any kind of varnish, because teak is so durable. Normally, you just wash it, with any soap but ammonia, and then oil it. Good as new.
Yes, these chairs have been copied much.
For good reason.
They are comfortable, and they fold up small. And they are tough.
But the copies tell no story of a time of opulence.
The copies capture not the imagination.
Every estate of substance should have one of these in their collection. But only so many were made. And now they are rare.

This particular chair comes from the Hollywood Hills estate of a 1960s starlet. It has been around the world many times. It has seen war, and peace. And it has endured many a poolside cocktail party.
