AD&D Insurance Claim denied... Help! (Greater Los Angeles Area)

For over a decade, I have paid for ADD insurance through MetLife. My policy was for $750,000. In 2022, I was shot in the face while intervening in what I thought was a DV and lost permanent vision in my right eye as a result. I filed a claim in 2023 with MetLife and was ignored for 2 years before my claim was finally denied. I received a letter in the mail while traveling out of state and missed the 60-day response deadline. The reason for the denial was that the police couldn't determine the primary aggressor and insinuated it was me to the insurance investigator. I had this reviewed by a couple of other attorneys, who both agreed that I got screwed, and that I COULD have been charged (what I dispute as a former cop myself) was not a valid reason for the denial but they weren't interested in arguing my case beyond the missed deadline.
IS THERE ANY WAY AROUND THIS RESPONSE DEADLINE?? I didn't even notice it in fine print on the reverse side of the denial letter till it was too late.
