We are selling our beloved Morgan 41 Out Island due to health issues. We bought her as a project boat with plans to sail the Pacific, but things have changed for us. We have countless hours of video on our Sail Before Sunset YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdoAsilYGT2tcsFj3KlB58w (search for boat tour) and information on our sailbeforesunset.com website. She would also make a great live aboard with her 13'8" beam. Total spent on upgrades/repairs as of 12/2022 was $62,173.43 not including new mainsail. Here are some of her upgrades:
New Engine: Beta Marine 60 in 2016 (currently about 400 hours) $25,500
Refeathered prop (to match engine) including installation and rebalance $495
New mainsail including new stack pack and complete sail cover $5,000
New refrigeration - cold plate $2,500
Drawer fridge $700
Rebuilt galley and food pantry $3,500
New stove/oven $1,700
Washing machine $250
Dodger (unfinished but functional) $2500
Dingy arch $10,800
Simrad marine radio with AIS $369
New Mantus anchor $800
150 foot anchor chain $500
Stern anchor
Lifesling
New windlass (2004 model brand new in box) $1,100
Solar and two 100 ah Lithium batteries $1000
New battery charger for Lithium batteries $250
New hydraulic steering lines $150
Hydraulic steering pump rebuilt $350
New floor in main galley $800
She is berthed in Wilmington at a relatively inexpensive marina. I believe that the slip fees are the least expensive on the west coast.
Additional information:
1. All of the cushions at the settee have been re-covered.
2. We bought cushions for the cockpit and covered those with white vinyl. Nice, 3-inch cushions, possibly 4, as I don’t remember exactly right now. But we wanted them to be comfortable to sit on.
3. Created cabinet/shelves in forward head, which can be removed as they are only screwed in. Creates more space for canned goods and other goods. You can still shower in that head, but it you want more room, you can remove the cabinet.
4. Engine has had 250 hour maintenance performed, including replacing o-rings on heat exchanger, changing coolant, checking impeller (good), changing the oil and filter, and changing the belt.
5. Replaced the water heater in engine room.
6. Solar includes 320 watts.
7. We installed a macerator and holding tank in the aft head, but not in the forward head. You can use the forward head, but not if you are within 3 miles of land.
8. Installed medicine chest in aft head plus shelving.
9. Installed new (old) doors in aft head.
10. New mattress in aft cabin, as well as cabinets.
With regard to some of the things listed above, there is still work to be done. In 2019, we were going to be finishing the work before we left for the South Pacific but, as stated, health issues arose and we stopped working on the boat.
We recently took someone out on a sea trial and using the mainsail only, the boat did 5 knots inside Angel's Gate.
A survey was recently performed and we found that there is nothing serious wrong with the boat. We did find out that six seacocks need to be replaced, 75% of the hoses below the waterline need to be replaced, and the mast step needs to be replaced It shouldn't take too long for the work to be done. Eddie's Marine (nearby) has said they would charge $800 to haul the boat out and about $450 for replacement of each seacock.
The asking price of $20,000.00 basically covers the newer engine ($25,000), the arch ($10,000), the new mainsail ($5,000), and the dodger ($2,500). The plan is to haul the boat out this fall and replace the seacocks and have the bottom painted, which will add to the asking price.
In our opinion, the asking price is very fair as we have done a lot of work on the boat. If you buy the boat for $20,000, then, for only $10,000.00 more, you can have a great boat. Morgans were overbuilt because they were to be chartered in the caribbean. They are renowned on the East Coast as "coral crushers" because of their thick hull. Also, because they are shoal-keeled, you can get closer to shore than most sailboats.
This ad will remain up but will be edited as work is performed. Ultimately, we will sell the boat for more than $25,000.00 because of all the upgrades and new engine, but after performing work on it, we will probably sell it for more than $60,000.00.
This is a great way to break into owning an awesome sailboat. Low price but increase the value as the work is performed, if you have the money to invest.
