condition: fair
make / manufacturer: Morpheus
model name / number: PanaSpot II
Up for sale is some rather unique Grateful Dead memorabilia: a pair of two (2) Morpheus Panaspot 2 computer-controlled moving head theatrical lights that toured with the Grateful Dead in the 1980's. (I have a total of six (6) pairs available, a.k.a. twelve (12) lights total). Sold as-is, but the last time I powered these lights on a decade or so ago, the lamps all struck (i.e. lit up), and the internal components all properly reset to their "home" positions. For your historical / contextual memorabilia reference, here is the URL address of an auction hosted by Sothebys for one of the roadie t-shirts worn by the Panaspot II stage crew on the Grateful Dead's 1983 tour: https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/luxury/collectibles/_front-panaspot-stage-light-company-shir-695c (price on that shirt, $310. No Grateful Dead Panaspot II crew t-shirts are included in this eBay listing, just the actual Grateful Dead Panaspot II lights themselves).

The Morpheus Panaspot II moving light is built around an Osram HTI 400 W/24 lamp, and features control channels for approximately 190º of both Pan and Tilt, Intensity/douser, Zoom, two different fixed gobo / pattern wheels, and four internal color scrollers, one of which is set up for use as either a diffusion or strobe effect. It is powered by 110V 60Hz AC power, the same as found in U.S. residential households ... so it would be possible to wire these lights up to work off the power in your garage, and rock out like Jerry Garcia in the 80’s (LSD not included). Control protocol is 0 - 10V DC, but conversion to modern DMX 512 is possible via installing an onboard conversion card.

Each pair of two (2) lights comes inside of their original wooden road cases, still in the black-and-blue color scheme used on the Grateful Dead tours (each road case houses 2 instruments/lights per case). I also have a small stockpile of spare replacement parts and components for these lights, the original rack-mounted power & data distribution head units, and a small collection of original service & support technical literature from Morpheus for the Panaspot II. A collection of spare parts, the technical documents I have, and a rack-mounted power & data head unit will be included with each pair of lights purchased.

In addition to the total of twelve (12) working lights in my inventory which I mention above, I also have two (2) additional lights (in their own road case) which can be brought back to full operating condition (one of them needs a new lamp, the other needs a new tilt belt). Somewhere I also have two (2) of the data head units that translated computer control board data into 0 - 10V DC control signals for the power & data head units.

These moving lights toured on the road with the Grateful Dead in the 1980's, so even though all the lamps lit up and the internal components properly reset the last time I powered them on a decade or so ago, these lights are very old, used, and not guaranteed to function as originally intended (or at all). They are sold strictly as-is, where-is, with no returns offered.

SHIPPING:

These lights are only sold in pairs of two (2) inside of a wooden road case. Each road case is 22” wide x 30” long x 43” tall, and weighs 163 lbs with two lights (lights weigh 56 lbs each, empty case weighs 51 lbs). Please be advised the road cases were stripped of their rolling casters, handles and locks many years ago (that hardware is not available or included). The spare parts and head unit included with each order will come on top of the road case, and add approximately 25 lbs of additional weight and 12” of additional height.

I offer local pickup for free in the Lakewood, California area. You must bring a truck with a ramp or a lift gate. Each case must be moved on a rolling furniture dolly and/or placed on a pallet for forklifting (not included).

I WILL NOT SHIP OR MAKE SHIPPING ARRANGEMENTS MYSELF, BUT if you wish to make arrangements for shipping out of the Los Angeles area, on a shipping provider of YOUR choice and arrangement, you may hire me to transport your purchase(s) to any shipping terminal within a reasonable distance of Lakewood, CA for the cost of the necessary rental truck & packaging materials (strap, plastic wrap), plus a reasonable labor fee. If you wish to send a shipping carrier to my residential location to pick up your purchase(s), I can also make myself available to meet the truck driver & loading laborers (if you need me to load the road case onto said truck for you, I can do so for a reasonable labor fee; I can also provide simple 4x4 wood blocks to place the case on inside the truck, so you won't need to buy a pallet). If you wish to make shipping arrangements yourself, I would estimate an all-in total weight of 190 lbs, and a footprint of 22” wide, 30” long, 59” tall. Please note these road cases are too large and heavy for the US Postal Service, or ordinary UPS or FedEx shipping. You might be able to get FedEx freight to handle them, but your most economical option will likely be an LTL (Less Than Load) freight carrier.
