This fresco is part of a larger work called "Lecture and Penitence," found in the Villa of Mysteries near Pompeii.
The Villa of Mysteries contains an extensive cycle of frescoes depicting mythological and human characters in initiation scenes and celebrations.
These frescoes are considered a prime example of the Roman "III style," also known as Augustean style, dating from 20 B.C. to about 50 A.D.
