Early American Pattern Glass (EAPG for short) is pressed glass made from around 1850 until about 1914.
This is an EAPG ‘Inverted Eye’ Jelly True Open Compote, National Glass Co #519, introduced in 1902 (later became Riverside Glass Works in Wellsburg, WV). In perfect vintage condition.
A rare hard to find pattern, the ‘Inverted Eye’ is a beautiful and elegant pattern, and can be used as a candy or nut dish, or a beautiful accent to a table or china cabinet. Weight 2.5 pounds. Open top diameter 6 7/8”, bottom diameter 4-1/2”, height 7 5/8”.
The glass was originally clear and became naturally “sun-purpled” over the years.* The resulting subtle lavender hue is very lovely!
*Certain types of glass, particularly old glass containing manganese dioxide, can turn a lavender or purple hue when exposed to sunlight over time due to a photochemical process called solarization; essentially, the ultraviolet rays in sunlight cause a change in the manganese compound within the glass, leading to the color shift.
