Description:  Recreation of the 1890 first edition and limited to a small run through Easton Press.  A tale of the American Experience as some of our ancestors arrived at what was the first stop in this country (New York).  A tale of our growing country in the second century of our independence and the challenges of the industrial revolution.  Most of all however, a tale of burgeoning social inequality and living conditions in our greatest city New York.  This work by Jacob Riis sparked an outcry of public conscience and a decade of public and private works to improve living conditions for Poorer inhabitants of New York's lower east side.  Likely it also affected other large cities.  It also preceded the significant social improvements sparked by the disparity of the gilded age and upheaval of 1920s.  It described not only the living conditions among the tenements of New York slums, but of the sweat shops that paid barely a pittance per day.  Now obviously compared to some of my other books, the point of this one is not to provide beautiful pictures and drawings, but rather a record of some of these tenements, work houses, and neighborhoods.  Like Upton Sinclair's The Jungle, the greatness and significance of this book is its literary accomplishment and historical impact.  Then Police Commissioner Theodore Roosevelt called Jacob Riis "The most useful citizen of New York".
