Cheese preservers were used prior to refrigeration.
The raised lettering on the underside of the lid gives the following information and directions for usage.
Sanitary Cheese Preserver.
Remove lid daily.
Place one third pint vinegar and one tablespoon salt in bottom lightly diluted with water.
7½ diameter 7"tall to top of lid knob.
The preserver has very thick glass, is very heavy and has been well maintained and in excellent condition.
Also included is the slice of Swiss cheese which is actually a candle that has been used to complete the country kitchen decor presentation. The candle original plastic wrap has never been removed.
