1966 Dodge Dart 270 convertible for sale in Los Angeles, 91304. Here’s a really decent, rust free, mostly original car. It has been woman owned since new (except for me (2nd owner) since 2015), and has clearly never been “hot rodded” to within an inch of its’ life by young, reckless kids.
CONDITION-WISE It’s a 225 slant 6 Torqueflite car. Luckily, it has both power steering, and a power top. Both might need fluid. So could I at my advanced age. Ha-ha. Nothing is terribly “wrong” with the car. It appears to be insanely rust free, with original paint, black California license plates, and the physical damage that it does have is quite minor. All the 1966-specific, 270 series-specific moldings are intact and look decent. No worries, there.
It has very recent brakes and new drums. All the windows go up and down easily. The top is still in one piece. So is the rear window. The car is terribly dirty, and could use a thorough detailing. The upholstery is quite nice. So are the door panels. We’re talking about 60-year-old soft trim here, people. The carpet and door sills could use replacement in the not-too-distant future. The dash pad and dashboard in general are extra nice.
Since the original wheels and tires were 13 inchers from the factory I wisely upgraded to 14 x 5.5 inch wheels off of an early Barracuda Formula 'S' car. I then had the wheels professionally sandblasted and painted. They look terrific.
The bigger 14 inch tires are brand new 215 70 R 14 Uniroyal Tiger Paw radial white walls. They only have about 1 mile of service on them. The bigger hubcaps are absolutely gorgeous, stunning, fairly damage free, period correct, mid 1960s, beautiful looking Dodge pieces.
As wheels and tires go these are show quality. The original 13 inch wheels, tires, and hubcaps are included with the sale of the car. They too, are in exceptionally nice condition. The tires are about 10 years old and absolutely do not leak air even after prolonged service intervals. You should be set for wheels and tires for the immediate future. Ha ha.
Several rare parts go with the car, like the convertible chrome moldings on the “fin”, for instance. There are a few boxes of other good stuff, too. The buyer will NOT have to scrounge around dusty junkyards looking for elusive rare parts. It’s all there. YAY! This will be a very easy car to “do”.
The engine will need a little attention. In the 10 years of my ownership, it has never idled quite “right”. It makes great, smooth power when you step on the gas, and will actually lay rubber, believe it or not, but when the vacuum signal returns to idle speed, the engine runs somewhat rough. I installed a brand new $309 solid state 60,000-volt distributor, and plug wires. Car ran better, but still not “right”.
Next up was a new carb. Again, ran better, but just not “right”. More than one hard core Mopar enthusiast at these big Chrysler car shows informed me that I probably have a tiny vacuum leak where the intake manifold bolts to the cylinder head. It’s common, they claim because of the tremendous length and width of the intake. They recommend removal of the intake, machining it back to flat, and then with a new gasket installed, everything should be A-OK again.
I just have too many old cars at my house and I’m not really a Mopar guy. Of special note, I bought a complete 273 V-8, 4-speed, positraction 4 door donor car to install the drivetrain in the Dart.

Anyhoooo, it is now a good running car with a mid-1970s 318. It is in Western New York, and the guy MIGHT be interested in selling it. I just spoke with him again about a week ago. He loves that dopey car. He sent me a video of him driving it around. What makes that car so special?
Well, it’s a first year 273 V8, first year A-833 4 speed, with a first year Hurst competition Plus 4 speed BENCH SEAT shifter, and special-order differential gears with limited slip. You can see why I wanted it so badly. The Dart would have been blessed with all that righteous donor hardware. I know, you can’t keep them all. Cripes! A Hurst 4 speed BENCH SEAT shifter. Perfect for a non-bucket seat car with a bench seat. Damn! Whatever. Fix the Slant 6 or get a V8 4-speed set-up. It’s your call. Buy this car, put the top down and go cruise already, dude! You’re not getting’ any younger.
