1967 Cutlass Supreme 2 door hardtop. $18,000. Here’s a pretty decent Southern California fairly rust free car. It is about 95% original and 98% rust free. The “newer” parts are: paint, front seat upholstery, upgraded transmission, upgraded exhaust and upgraded wheels and tires. Details below.
The Supreme became a full series in 1967. It was a 1-car “series” in 1966 with the introduction of the 4-door hardtop “A” body at GM. Olds wisely used the opportunity to create a “better”, nicer, “A” body. For 1967 the Supreme was a tonier car then the “regular” Cutlass. It featured way nicer door panels with stainless moldings and carpeting at the bottom along with a bigger armrest, a different rear bumper, different back up lights, much better looking side trim, better upholstery and a serious upgrade in engine power.
The “straight” Cutlass had a 155 hp Chevy inline 6. YECCCCH! The optional Olds V8 was a 250 hp low compression 2 barrel job, while the Supreme came with the almighty 330 cubic inch Olds ultra high compression 320 hp 4 barrel rocket engine. Whoa, Nelly! Better use premium fuel, sport. But, with single exhaust and a resonator, the “as delivered” horsepower was probably considerably less. More on that later. Another element holding back that engine was the stupid 2 speed automatic transmission. Both of these shortcomings were “taken care of” by me. I “cured” both of those ailments.
Onward! The trans is now a killer THM350 with the “right” torque converter and an aftermarket shift kit. It shifts like a champ, now. That was over $2,500 installed. The wheezy, whiny 2 speed is long gone. Good riddance! Next up, I installed Thornton Olds small block hi-po exhaust manifolds and had Gardner Exhaust in Red Hook, New York sell me 442 mufflers, 442 tail pipes, and 442 exhaust tips, along with custom made 1-of-a-kind exhaust pipes to fit the Thornton manifolds. BOO-YAH! Holy 100 horsepower gain, Batman! The manifolds were like $400, the exhaust system was over $1,200 and the installation at Midas at $165 per hour came out to over $2,600. I know, holy crap, but, you only live once.
Car sounds absolutely awesome now. It’ behaves like a totally different car now. It went from a timid Timmy car to a roaring brute overnight. What a dramatic difference in acceleration, and I didn’t even touch the engine. Next up, the wheels. The car had ho-hum bleccchy 14-inch wheels and hubcaps that resembled scratched metal dog food bowls. I installed brand new, beefy 15 x 7-inch Olds chrome wheels and generous 245 60 R 15 BF Goodrich radial TA tires, and then KYB Gas-a-just shocks along with big sway bars front and back, and Hotchkiss 148 pound variable rate rear coil springs that lower the car about an inch. Again, what a freakin’ difference!
The driver’s side front seat was amateurishly reupholstered about 1995 and now looks not-so-great. The rear seats look terrific, and so do the door panels. Included with the purchase of the car are brand new Legendary Auto front seats in the correct shade of blue, and brand new, correct 80/20 carpeting, front and back. We removed the carpet sill moldings to show how insanely rust free the floors are.
The rear package shelf is now toast and the headliner is starting to fall down. No big deal on those 2 fairly inconsequential and inexpensive items. The paint has a lovely hue of Southwest sun tan on the yecchhy clear coat paint job. The car will probably need a brake job in the very near future. I have all 4 brand new front control arms if the buyer wishes to purchase them.
Content-wise, the car has the aforementioned 320 hp 330 cube high output Olds engine, power steering and brakes, AC (all there but needs freon. Blew cold until about 2021 or so), bucket seats, the center console with the floor shifter, AM-FM radio (valuable) and stuff like that. The trunk floor looks really good on this car. The quarter panels, too, are gorgeous.
The pot metal trim is really nice. Only the hood windspear seems to have noticeable “dullness” to it. Maybe it’s a replacement. The other pot metal trim is pretty dreamy. There are 2 spares of the missing stainless piece on the passenger side. No worries, there. I also installed a stock looking, high voltage solid state distributor about a year ago. It needs to be dialed in correctly. It’s a few degrees off right now. The car runs fine, but the timing is at about negative 2 degrees. Bumping it up about ten degrees will make this car scream.
Feel free to ask any other questions. It has the highly desirable black plate California 1960s license plates and even a “1967” sticker on the front plate. Talk about original, geez. I’m writing this ad in late 2025. This is about as good a specimen as can reasonably be expected for this model car for under $25,000. Please buy it before I change my mind.
I absolutely LOVE this car. Had it forever. Thanks in advance.
