First:
There are twice as many tracks/channels as on a stereo machine, so you can separately record 4 microphones/instruments instead of just 2. Each of the 4 instruments, or other audio sources, will reside on its own track.
Second:
Since each of the 4 separate microphones/instruments/audio sources records to its own part of the tape (track),
YOU CAN OVERDUB = GO BACK AND ERASE AND RE-RECORD ANY 1 TRACK WITHOUT DISTURBING THE OTHERS.
This is especially useful if you want to change a couple of tracks without disturbing the others. A common variation on this usage is when one person wants to play 4 different instruments. You will be able to record one instrument, or other audio source, one at a time, then play it back and record a second instrument in time with the first. You can continue this procedure, playing back both instruments, record the 3rd instrument, then play back all 3 and record the 4th instrument.
Each of the 4 instruments/audio sources will be "first-generation" recorded on its own track.
So if you want to re-record just one without disturbing the others, you can.
