Exceptional and rare 1950s expandable rosewood dining table with lacquered mahogany legs by Harvey Probber, restored to perfection.
A work of breathtaking beauty, this table also showcases Probber’s brilliance in engineering. Legs this slender shouldn’t be able to support a table of this size and weight. The top, on account of its size and the hidden steel girders to which the apron is mounted, weighs upwards of 100 pounds.
To account for this, Probber designed legs of forged steel encased in mahogany, maintaining an organic look while providing the shear and compressive strength required for the massive top. Brass stretcher bars provide additional support and complement the original brass foot caps.
With both leaves inserted, it expands from 80” to 112”. With a width of 44”, two guests can sit at each end at each end, making it possible to host gatherings of up to fourteen. The extension slides open and close with a gear mechanism that can be operated by one person.
A beautiful and thoughtfully engineered piece that will outlive us all. Fully refinished and ready to serve for generations to come.
