Expertly restored “Colonial” Lounge Chair and Sofa / Settee set by Ole Wanscher, made in Denmark by Peter Jeppesen.
The lounge chair was originally designed in 1949 with the sofa following a decade and a half later in 1964, bringing together a mix of Danish mid century modernism and traditional mid English aesthetic. This particular set was made in the mid to late 1960s.
The Colonial Chair and Sofa were originally available in rosewood or mahogany, the latter option possibly reflecting the influence of Wanscher’s mentor, Kaare Klint, whose early sofas and famous Red Chair were produced from a Cuban variety of the wood.
This set is made from solid mahogany with caned seats and cushions fashioned from Edelman Royal Hide leather. The frames have been meticulously restored and the seats expertly recaned. The seat and back cushions are newly reupholstered.
The sofa was not widely produced until its relaunch by Carl Hansen & Son in 2015, making an ensemble like this vanishingly rare. An heirloom quality set expertly restored for generations of future use.
