If you can grow geraniums, you can grow these exotic looking East Asian wildflowers!
These are absolutely the EASIEST orquids to grow.
Unlike orquids that are bought at a grocery store and grown indoors (a windowsill/counter), or mounted to a bark or tree, THESE orquids are grown outdoors *and* in the soil (whether that be in a ground landscape or in containers). They are known as being terrestrial.
The main reason why I ADORE these gems in that they are "drought tolerant" AND can take a descent amount of sun exposure.
It's a joy to see and watch them grow and flower. They are one of the VERY 1st blooming plants I see in my yard each January.
*Care*
-These plants prefer morning and late afternoon/evening sun. Filtered light under a tree is perfect!
-These orquids should be planted "outdoors in the earth" or in a container/pot. You could grow them indoors in a brightly lit windowsill, sun room, etc. and then move them into your garden later in the season.
-Planting them in well-draining, average soil is fine!
-The plants will start replicating very quickly (from underground rhizomes). You will have the amount of stalks in just a few years.
-They don't require much care (just trim their spent foliage come autumn)!
*Description*
-Give that mixed border or container garden the look of unique elegance. Plant them in a rock garden or front border, these bright rose-fuchsia colors and pleasing leaf form attract lots of attention.
-If you want to have an Asia-atmosphere garden -- they will provide a nice theme to a nearby Buddha statue, water fountain, waterfall, or pond.
-New green growth starts to emerge in late December/early January.
-Eventually the foliage will reach 25" in length. It has lance like, ribbed, mid-green leaves. After their flowers are long gone, the leaves are very graceful and peaceful to observe, while blowing in a breeze.
-The rose-fuchsia blooms appear in the Winter Season (January/February) they continue/last through Spring Season (March, sometimes through May).
-Similar to a bulb, the plants go to sleep in late Autumn/Winter (typically, November thru January). In October/November, I trim down their foliage, so they are semi-leafless for a couple of months. During the months of October/November/December, all you will see (if anything) are a couple of plant stalks cut down to 3"-5" in height.
NOTE: I typically don't sell these during Winter time UNLESS you are familiar with the cycle of a standard bulb...as these are similar. Compared to other bulbs, these have a brief dormancy period.
*Cost/What you Receive*
-My orquids are established and come with their plastic pots and soil OR if you prefer as clumps.
-They are ready to be transplanted in your home landscape or in larger pots.
FYI: the pots don't have to be very deep/tall.
-I will provide you with my personal advice for planting (written document) and additional information.
-Prices start at $20 and go up to $85, depending on quantity of rhizomes/maturity. Cash payment only.
-Each pot has between 2 and 10 rhizomes. Hence, the more quantity/mature rhizomes, the higher the cost.
*Best Feature*
-Drought tolerant! They can get by on our minimal rain water. Add them to your low watering use garden for a lush green foliage with bright flowering appearance!
-Nice carefree plant, winter hardy, and quite beautiful!
*History*
-These are terrestrial orquids originally from East Asian countries.
Let me know if you want some of my favorite orquids!
