My name is Cesar Rueda. I'm a tenant advocate and an eviction defense attorney.
I'm the founder of Housing Justice Now, a nonprofit law firm, dedicated to defending tenants that are being unlawfully evicted.
I provide full legal representation at a discounted rate. If we can settle your case without going to trial, I charge only a flat rate of $1,500. (The majority of cases settle or get dismissed before trial.) If the case does not settle, then there will be an additional charge of $500 to go to trial. This rate applies to cases at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse and the Van Nuys Courthouse. If your case is at a different courthouse, there may be an additional charge, depending on our capacity.
If you wish to sue your landlord due to slumlord conditions or for tenant harassment, contact me to discuss your case. The retainer amount and contingency will depend on the complexity of the case. Feel free to reach out anytime.
Attorney Fees: $1,500 if settled or resolved before trial.
Additional $500 if the case is resolved at trial.
(If you do NOT qualify for a court fee waiver, you will also be responsible for court fees. Please contact us for a complete list of court fee.)
You can also email me by responding to the link at the top of this page.
Important: If you have been served with summons and complaint for an unlawful detainer (eviction), you MUST file an answer within 10 days or the plaintiff will obtain a default judgment against you. If you cannot find an attorney, there are several self-help centers available that can help you draft and file an answer (defense) to the UD / eviction and provide you with a list of available resources.
