Senna bicapsularis or Winter Cassia is a unique addition to any Southern garden. This large shrub begins producing showy, vibrant yellow blooms while other attractive plants go dormant during Winter. In late Autumn to Winter, Christmas Senna erupts with exotic color that is bound to keep a landscape looking lively.
While its flowers are interesting enough, cassia have an unusual leaf structure that adds visual interest even when they are not blooming. The ultra-soft, small round leaves of Winter Cassia are extremely delicate, but beautiful. To avoid issues with this plant's soft foliage and stems as it matures be sure to prune it regularly, which encourages branching and stability.
Historically, Winter Cassia has been utilized for a variety of medicinal practices in Central America. There are records of this plant being used in 'enchantments' to cure illness and treatment of insect bites.
