Responsibilities
Specimen handling: Receive, identify, and log tissue specimens from surgical, diagnostic, or autopsy cases. Prioritize specimens based on urgency and type.

Embedding and microtomy:
Orient processed tissue into blocks and use a microtome to cut extremely thin slices for mounting on slides.

Equipment maintenance:
Clean, operate, and perform routine preventative maintenance on all laboratory equipment. Troubleshoot mechanical issues and report malfunctions to a supervisor.
Record-keeping: Maintain accurate records, including pathology logs, block and slide files, and quality control documentation.

Inventory management:
Monitor and manage laboratory supplies, including reagents, stains, and antibodies.

Collaboration:
Communicate effectively with pathologists and other laboratory staff to support efficient workflow and ensure timely processing.

Preferred Qualifications

Education: An associate degree or a certificate from a NAACLS-accredited histotechnology program is often required.
Certification: Certification as a Histotechnician (HT) from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is preferred or required by many employers.

Skills:
Strong manual dexterity and excellent color vision for delicate tissue handling and slide evaluation. Exceptional attention to detail, precision, and organizational skills.
Proficiency in modern laboratory techniques and the operation of lab equipment.
Solid knowledge of medical terminology, human anatomy, and safety practices.
Basic computer skills for data entry and information systems.

Work environment
Work is performed in a clinical or research laboratory setting, with potential exposure to biohazardous materials and chemicals.
Requires standing for extended periods and using fine motor skills for repetitive tasks.
