Many children find reading and writing to be difficult or boring, but they aren't wrong. These subjects are often taught in a standardized manner, with the goal of producing one "right" answer, or they are based on analyzing texts that children simply aren't interested in. My goal with tutoring is not just to boost scores, but to help develop a new relationship to both reading and writing—the rest will follow.
I have a Master's degree (soon to be PhD) in Education and a decade of experience working in afterschool settings. I draw on alternative, interest-based methods to generate excitement in reading and writing by connecting to activities that children already enjoy, which can include popular and digital media. I focus on aspects of writing such as genre, clarity, and aesthetics.
My starting price is $40 an hour, subject to negotiation based on distance and time commitment. My ideal client is a child 8–12 years of age within the San Fernando valley area who either needs additional support or enrichment in reading and writing. My service works best with children who have had prior difficulty with traditional methods, or who may think more easily in pictures than words. It is also not intended as a substitute for treatment-based approaches such as speech language pathology or occupational therapy.
