It was a versatile 4x4 utility vehicle used for scouting, as a battlefield ambulance, or as a staff car. Its design, known for being simple and reliable, included features like a flathead engine, a three-speed manual transmission, a two-speed transfer case for four-wheel drive, and a windshield that folded down. Ford was contracted to produce the jeep when it became apparent that Willys could not keep up with production demand.
