I'm a video editor and I need very fast storage for editing 4k video and graphics. I'm moving away from RAID setups and was searching for the most compact, simple and fastest speed available. It turns out the holy grail is a gen 5 NVMe in a Thunderbolt 5 enclosure. This thing is faster than a virgin in a threesome. The drive itself boasts speeds of up to 14,800/13,400 MB/s1 sequential read/write speeds, but due to the limitations of Thunderbolt 5, the fastest speed available from an external connection at this time is around 6400MB/s. This means that this drive is capable of handling more than 2x the current speeds available and will be adaptable to future upgrades in Thunderbolt technology.
That being said, it's extremely fast. I included a Blackmagic speed test in the photos to prove it. You want to edit 8k video? No problem. 12k video? Everything but H.265. If you're looking for the fastest and simplest solution for high speed storage, this is it. Just make sure you have a Thunderbolt 5 port. All newer Macs come with it, and some PCs do as well. I bought 2 of these, but recently changed my setup so that I only need one, so I'm letting this one go.
You might be saying to yourself, "damn that's expensive!" but ask yourself this... Is it more portable, faster and safer than a striped raid 0? You bet your A$$ it is! With a striped raid, if any of those drives fail, your data is toast. Not to mention you can't put that beast of a box in your pocket. Plus this is still WAY faster than a raid 0. The drive and enclosure retail for $2885.
