Perhaps you recently purchased a baritone guitar, Bass VI, or extended range shred machine only to discover that your “guitar voiced” amp couldn’t handle it. Or perhaps you’re a bassist engaged in a “volume war” with your guitarist who insists on playing through a dimed Matamp full stack. Well better pop a Tums now, because I’m about to give you a serious case of GAS.
Behold! The Doom Rig of Doom! Assembled with love for all the reasons stated above. Here’s the breakdown, from bottom to top…
Avatar 2x12 bass or guitar cab - 4 ohm - bought this empty and loaded with a 12” 8 ohm Swamp Thang and an 8ohm EVM 12L. Both capable of handling 200w so suitable for guitar or bass
Note: the “rust” on the grill is fake. I painted it myself. I wanted this amp to look like it was dredged up from a swamp.
Standalone price - $600
Avatar 15/10 bass cab - 4 ohm - factory stock except I disconnect the horn because why would I want a tweeter for a rig like this. Feel free to reconnect it.
Standalone price - $400
Peavey 120/120 power amp - holy crap is this thing loud. It’s got 8 — 8!!! - 6L6s inside, 4 per channel. Bridged to mono. It’s loud enough to extinguish the sun. So maybe don’t do that. These things are rare and a complete sleeper, unholy in every way.
Standalone price - $600
Verellen Meatsmoke stereo preamp - another rare bird, this is actually two 12AX7-powered Meatsmokes housed in the same rack unit. You can run stereo two channels, one channel mono, or stacked. I also have a footswitch for it someplace that allows you to switch channels or turn on the dirt. Please note that there is one issue with this piece, namely the LEDs don’t always light up. It still functions you’ll just have to use your ears to figure out what’s on and what isn’t. But the good news is Ben Verellen, while not building amps anymore, still honors the lifetime warantee. So all you have to do is ship it to Ben in Seattle and it’ll be like new. Still I’m knocking a bit off the price for the hassle.
Standalone price - $750 (SOLD)
all-in price: $2000
Please note that I would much rather get this whole beast out of my storage unit so if you want the whole kit, I might be willing to haggle a bit. I’ll also throw in the rack for the pre and post amps, a value of at least a hundo.
For piecemeal purchases though the prices are firm, as in no don’t ask.
Also bear in mind this rig is the heaviest amp I’ve ever owned and perhaps the heaviest non-celestial object I’ve ever encountered. So if you decide to go for it please have a strong back, or strong friends, or both. The good news is it’s all modular and each piece can be fitted with casters. So not as inconvenient as an SVT plus 8x10 fridge.
