OVERVIEW / GENERAL
-- japanese production (battery grip as well)
-- first introduced in 2008
-- magnesium alloy body under black paint
-- 5ds, 5dsr, and obviously i, iii, and iv are the rest of the models types and generations in this line
-- held up in price of around 250-350 usd over time
-- bought in europe used in 2021
-- used on a few video shoots, and numerous but still a modest amount of photo shoots
-- no disassembly/repair/physical damage
-- the legendary 5d2 was made to be one of the most important cameras of our day - the first hybrid dslr camera which allows both photo and video shooting breaking the boundaries of its time - a few big budget hollywood films used it for some of their shots and it also became a go-to for many small film studios
-- a7iii was the big one at that time, so i got a cheap nex-5t as a stepping stone after i bought the discounted 1.8/50 (should have just started with vintage straight up); really wanted full-frame but had to gear up my recording studio, so i went with the cheapest full-frame camera, tried and true; now the next a7iii is the s5iix (which i recently got) in terms of features for value, and the amount of pro video features it brings to that price point is immense, not to mention the $600 a73 is still being hoarded for over 1000; honestly i am probably going to avoid full-frame going on more leg work - the first time i went on a shoot with this canon and the 2.8/70-200 i had wrist pain for a week from all the times pulling up the camera to my face in both wrists at the exact angles that i pulled up the camera with each hand; and now i have been enjoying micro four thirds to say the least
-- published this sale on multiple sites so get it while it's hot
ESSENTIAL INFORMATION
-- shutter count around 55k from the 150k actuation warranty rating.
-- video overheating: don't cross your fingers if you're trying to shoot long-form; good for burst video though.
-- hdmi output: i am not sure if it is output in full quality but that might help with overheating.
-- battery tab issue: i have had power issues with the camera ever since i got it but only because i didn't know about the battery activation tab (compensated on battery doors and grip with tape) - the tab needs to be pressed in in order for the camera to be able to turn on, otherwise it thinks it's dangerous, despite the battery being locked in by the holding tab; the tab is very thin and the pins on the doors are apparently incompatible, recently also started having issues with the battery grip, perhaps the tab has moved around, but it doesn't get pressed in so i've added tape to thicken the pins to be able to press in the tab; make sure your batteries are charged too (the first time i got this issue before realizing i was afraid the camera died!). after some basic research this seems to be a running gag with canon cameras.
-- ef is a good system, probably one of the best developed modern systems prior to sony e mount; a lot of compatible lenses, and good native glass.
-- canon's standard gatekeeping prevents you from accessing the card as a folder but only as a media device. you cannot add anything but can extract and delete media. this is where the sd adapter comes in handy, but if you want the fastest card for the fullest potential you might want to get a cf reader, my cheap low-quality one broke and took one of my cards with it.
-- the camera came to me without battery doors and the ones i got are off-brand, they do not appear to have any weather sealing so keep it in mind if ever using in the rain.
OVERALL IMPRESSIONS
-- nice video considering this is the first video dslr hybrid.
-- outstanding photos; i don't know how much it takes to perfect green and orange for nature and skin tones within a camera's so-called "color science", but they are to an extent subtle and well-controlled within canon cameras - again, nothing you can't modify (even if you avoid post-processing) through a slight white balance tint tilt within the camera color profile; and yes, it is possible to work well without involving a raw process in your workflow and baking all final corrections into the jpg with only minor adjustments and corrections left for post.
-- good (photo) autofocus with native lenses.
-- full-frame though very nice for depth and look brings along some very heavy lenses and lens-camera combos; once the novelty is over you'll be running towards mft like a lot of people - don't get me wrong, ff has its place and time, but if you're a run-and-gun shooter your back will definitely be thanking you at the end of the day.
-- in my opinion despite the weight difference, dslr is superior to mirrorless, and it's such a pity that almost all manufacturers deserted the system instead of making a good dslr-mirrorless-style hybrid - when the mirror flips up it turns into a mirrorless - genius! save the battery during photography or choose to use it with live-view, it's so obvious but they were probably all addicted to making new supposedly superior systems and dismantling their old lens lineups; lens adapting actually brings a lot to a camera.
-- magiclantern revives the camera and turns it into a capable beast from a hobbyist video party trick.
BRUTALLY HONEST CONSIDERATIONS
-- still holds up in the photography world till this day, that 24mp sensor was made to stand the trial of time.
-- unfortunately there are few true pancake lenses available for the system and the wrist pain is only to get worse.
-- though it is capable and i have shot short films with it, it is definitely not a proper video camera in terms of modern standards - you'd be better off getting an old handicam if that's your main concern.
-- although the iso performance is very poor in low light (especially compared to modern cameras), with sufficient light (even if it's low light) it is still very capable of producing a formidable result.
EXTERNAL CONDITION / COSMETICS
-- unfortunately i made a gash on the screen with some random item being tossed around in my bag during transport.
-- obvious paint wear and dings around the body during standard use, and no - the camera has not been abused.
-- there is no unglueing of the vinyl grip and wrap that covers the body, seemingly very well-built in that regard, but obviously all the plastic tab elements show how much of a workaround that is.
-- all ports in normal working condition without any damage.
-- no smells or excessive environmental contamination, used in a smoke-free, pet-free and excessive dust-free environment.
INTERNAL CONDITION / COMPONENTS
-- sensor is clean and pristine (has been dusted and wiped with special delicate cleaning tools).
-- the mirrors are a bit dusty but nothing to interfere with the functionality and can probably be cleaned easily.
-- the viewfinder has some dust inside and may need to be disassembled if a cleaning is ever required.
-- internal clock battery is still working (user-accessible without disassembly).
-- no fungus, ghosting, flaring, optical defects, or other damage that would deteriorate the produced image quality.
FUNCTIONALITY / INTERFACE / MECHANICS
-- the battery slot itself has no damage or corrosion and is in full working condition. the dummy battery cable slot on the camera itself is removable and replaceable without issue.
-- the lens mount is stable and firm.
-- there is no play in any of the external handling elements.
-- card port is fully functional with all connective pins intact.
-- all ports are fully functional, with no play or damage, with the only exception being the inconsistent battery door tab issue i mentioned which has the tape workaround. hotshoe is stable, actually used it to mount a top handle AND monitor with no issue for one or two shoots. port covers are all firm, except for the battery grip dummy battery port, which i actually just recently discovered and the cover broke apart as soon as i touched it (taped it together, should hold up for minor weather sealing, but just don't throw it in the water).
-- no loose elements.
-- one screw at the bottom of the body around the wi-fi module connector seems to be missing, no idea what happened there, but that's how i received it.
-- all buttons, wheels and controls are fully functional; battery grip shutter button is a bit soft; rear bottom wheel is a bit rough to rotate; the joystick is a bit wonky and soft but fully functional.
-- video autofocus - none that i know of, aside from single-focus prior to recording, but if you want to use this for video, learn manual focus, which is actually the proper way to do high-quality video; also the physical manual focus control of native ef lenses helps a lot.
-- no apparent audible noise aside from the flippy mirror.
-- top e-ink display is fully functional and accurate.
PERFORMANCE / CAPACITY
-- weird actuation delay when used for photo in live view, i don't know what the deal with that is, but definitely slower than shooting in standard dslr mode.
-- battery life is very doable for photo, underwhelming for video, but you'll probably get all the shots you need before the camera overheats.
-- sharp sensor, despite the aa filter. not converted or any funny business with the sensor by the way.
-- no color cast or spots on produced image or on display screen.
-- the card slot is nothing special, cf cards are kind of expensive too.
DURABILITY / LONGEVITY
-- as a pro dslr its warranty rates it for at least 150k shutter actuations but there are reports of this camera with a much higher shutter count, with over 2 million actuations.
-- don't physically abuse it and you'll be happy with what it can offer.
ACCESSORIES / ELEMENTS
-- i will be selling an ef 2.8/40 (white) pancake and an ef 2.8/70-200ii IS separately.
-- the off-brand batteries provide a bit less lifetime than the proprietary batteries but it's rarely noticeable.
-- unfortunately magiclantern was not installed on the cf card before my reader died but the sd card has it installed.
-- make sure to go into remote control shoot mode for the remote to work.
-- it's possible to trick the battery grip to close its little tab (which also prevents the camera from turning on) by clicking it in with the door but not closing it - the batteries are hotswappable this way and it's how i hooked up my dummy battery on my first shoot when the batteries eventually ran out and way before i knew there was a slot for the cable.
-- the battery grip switch must be turned on for it to send a signal to the camera. it is possible to shoot normally without using the grip controls but still use its batteries while it's off.
-- the camera has started showing only 1 battery in the battery information while both batteries are in the grip, it might be an issue with the plastic tab, but both slots function and work properly, the only difference is that the camera needs to be restarted and only one battery left inside to check its specific power level.
-- ml allows for a microphone input and audio monitoring through the same port. i am not sure if there is any audio output through hdmi.
-- the first time i used a hdmi recorder the output image was very low quality but now it seems to have resolved.
-- have used with an m42 to ef adapter and it works well.
COMPATIBILITY / CONNECTIVITY
-- ef, m42, etc. - whatever can be adapted.
-- you might want to try that eye-fi card, despite the battery drain.
-- mini-c-hdmi slightly superior to micro-d-hdmi.
ADDITIONAL REFERENCE / TECHNICAL DETAILS
-- all technical specifications, manuals, and guides available online in canon's archive and other "manualslib"-style sites with notable resources being cameradecision, apotelyt, wikipedia, bhphotovideo, and dpreview.

!!! REDUCE !!! REUSE !!! REPAIR !!!
Please take a moment to consider if it's possible to use your older devices and other belongings just a bit longer and whether you could find them an alternative use or pass them on to someone who might need them. If repair or component replacement is no longer an option, and if they are unusable and no parts of them are salvageable, then consider finding them an alternative use leaving their recycling and disposal as a last resort. Consider eliminating single-use materials and the purchase and disposal of non-biodegradable waste from your daily life. Recycling is not always an option and many materials are not recyclable, especially with modern consumer technology, avoided like an anthill where unprofitable. The continuous mindless production of e-waste and use of greenwashing for PR campaigns by corporate giants will lead to devastating results if we don't act against it. Vote with your wallet. Enjoy what you have and make it more special! Thank you for your interest.
